We have to start the post off with the initial bad news. Matlock season 2 won’t air a new episode tonight, Thursday, Dec. 18. The fall finale aired last Thursday, bringing us a major cliffhanger one particular Wellbrexa storyline.
However, that’s not where the bad news ends. There isn’t even a rerun of the series tonight. CBS will bring fall finales of its other three shows, with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and Ghosts both getting two-episode fall finales, taking over the 8/7c hour and the 9/8c hour respectively. Then we’ll end the night with the Elsbeth season 3 fall finale.

Matlock season 2 will return in 2026
Now, in some good news, it’s not the end of Matlock season 2. This is just the winter break, and we will get new episodes in 2026. But then there is more bad news, as this break is much longer than we’re used to.
CBS is opting to wait until the end of February to bring its shows back from the winter break. Matlock season 2 will return along with the other Thursday CBS shows on Thursday, Feb. 26. There is one main reason for this: the Winter Olympics.
NBC will air the Winter Olympics, but the networks aren’t going to want to go up against this, as a sporting fixture like this is going to take the win for the linear ratings. Rather than bring the shows back in January and then put them on hold for a few weeks in February, CBS has opted to hold off all shows until after the Winter Olympics, which is great news on the other side of the break. There should be more consistency in the run-up to finales in May!

What to expect when Matlock season 2 returns
So, just what can we expect when the series returns? CBS hasn’t revealed any details for the Matlock season 2 winter premiere, but we can take some guesses based on the way the fall finale ended. Matlock season 2’s fall finale had a major cliffhanger with Senior’s life on the line. He’s suffered a stroke, and there’s a chance that he won’t survive it, and this puts Matty and Olympia’s Wellbrexa plans on hold a little.
If Senior dies, there is only one person to take the fall for the Wellbrexa study being removed from the court case: Julian. Olympia doesn’t want the father of her children to go to jail, but she knows that Matty deserves closure, and so, she handed the Wellbrexa study over.
The problem is Julian has been keeping an eye on the two the entire episode, because he knew that they were up to something. He won’t want to go to jail, so now he needs to figure out how to get his hands on the Wellbrexa study and thwart Matty’s plans.
Matlock will return on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 9/8c on CBS.
