Matlock is adding a big recurring role in season 2 that will have a popular One Day At a Time star joining as a person from Senior's past!

Matlock is gearing up for a second season, which is likely to build on the momentum of the first year for the CBS hit. Kathy Bates earned an Emmy nomination for her role as Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a rich woman going undercover at the law firm of Jacobson & Moore to find out who buried files on opioid addiction. As her daughter died of an overdose, Matty is out to discover who could have prevented that.

Matty had tangled with the higher-ups at the firm, most prominently managing partner Howard "Senior" Markston (Beau Bridges." His son Julian (Jason Ritter) was revealed in the season 1 finale as the man who buried the files, putting Matty's friend and Julian's ex-wife, Olympia, in a bind.

Now, Deadline reports that Justina Machado, best known for the Netflix revival of One Day At a Time, will be joining season 2 as a person from Senior's past!

Who does Justina Machado play on Matlock?

Per Deadline, Machado will play Eva, "a formidable, smart, and ambitious attorney and Jacobson Moore managing partner Howard "Senior" Markston's (Beau Bridges) 4th ex-wife. The one who made him swear off marriage. Eva runs Jacobson Moore's Miami office and she arrives in New York for an emergency meeting… which she uses to her advantage."

Machado broke out with her role in the HBO drama Six Feet Under, launching a good career in TV and film. That included the reboot of One Day At A Time that aired on Netflix, then Pop TV. Machado has kept busy with roles in the Prime Video series The Horror of Dolores Roach and the Netflix medical drama Pulse

This will be a reunion as Matlock was created by Jennie Snyder Urman, who was also behind The CW dramedy Jane the Virgin, where Machado had a recurring role. The show also starred Yael Grobglas, who recurs on Matlock as jury consultant Shae Banfield.

Machado should spark up the show with her wonderful charm and humor and it'll be great seeing her put Senior off a bit. It's up in the air if she still carries a torch for him while trying to aid the firm. It'd also be fun to have Eva and Shae meet up for an encounter and if Eva has scenes with Matty.

With a fun new addition like this, Matlock season 2 appears to be getting even better than its first year to mark another successful year for the series.

Matlock season 2 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on CBS, before moving to Thursdays at 9/8c.
