Season 3, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, has been streaming on Netflix for just a week, yet creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have already started production on a fourth season. While the series has focused on 20th-century true crime stories so far, this season takes us even further back in time.
This season brings us the story of Lizzie Borden, a woman accused of murdering her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892. This would be the first ambiguous case, where the central figure of the story was tried and acquitted. But how will Murphy and Brennan tell the story? This remains to be seen.
Monster creators want to talk about female monsters now
Murphy and Brennan are determined to make this new installment about female killers, alleged or otherwise. It might have only focused on men so far, but that doesn't mean there are no female monsters out there.
In an interview with Variety, Murphy teased that this season "talks not just about Lizzie, but other infamous women who were branded as monsters", such as Countess Elizabeth Báthory and Aileen Wuornos. That hint suggests an anthology approach that could expand beyond Borden’s story.
But for the time being, we know for sure that the series found its Lizzie Borden in Ella Beatty, whom you might know as the daughter of actors Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, and for her recent roles in the series Feud (2017 - 2024) and the film If I Had Legs I'd Kick You (2025).

Who else is in the cast of Monster season 4
Some of the cast have officially been announced, and we'll see at least two of the actors from season 3, Monster: The Ed Gein Story, return for the 4th season. The most exciting is Charlie Hunnam, who turns from murderer into victim. He is set to play Andrew Borden, Lizzie's father. Besides the Monster series, Hunnam is known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy (2008-2014) and Crimson Peak (2015).
The other actor returning is Vicky Krieps, who played Nazi war criminal Ilse Koch in season 3. She will also have a "milder" role here, playing the Borden family's live-in maid, Bridget Sullivan. You might have seen Krieps before in Phantom Thread (2017), Old (2021), and Bergman Island (2021).
The show will also star:
- Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden (née Abby Durfee Gray), Lizzie's stepmother—known for her roles in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), The Town (2010) and Christine (2016).
- Billie Lourd as Emma Borden, Lizzie's older sister—you might know her as the daughter of Carrie Fisher, as well as for her appearances in the Star Wars franchise, in American Horror Story (2011-Present) and Scream Queens (2015-2016).
- Jessica Barden as Nance O'Neill, Lizzie's actress friend, responsible for the break of the bond between the sisters (after the crimes)—known for Hanna (2011), where she stars alongside Vicky Krieps, and for Far from the Madding Crowd (2015).
If Monster keeps its usual schedule, viewers can expect the fourth season to drop around September or October 2026. Keep an eye out for the trailer and more casting news as the Monster universe grows darker.
