All summer, we have had questions about whether or not Katrina Law was leaving NCIS. Well, the NCIS season 22 premiere got here, and it answered everything.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for the NCIS season 22 premiere

The new episode picked up six months after the season 21 finale. Knight and Palmer had broken up, and Knight said she was happy in California with her REACT team. That was certainly the case, until she saw someone from her not-so-distant past.

Knight helped Parker find Torres in the NCIS season 22 premiere

During the episode, Torres was working undercover with a drug cartel. As he went missing, Parker headed to California to find him. Knight had heard about something happening to Torres, so she teamed up with Parker and they hunted him down.

It was the reminder of “home” that Knight needed. As much as she loves the job that she is in now, there was something missing for her. That something was Washington, D.C. It’s the people at NCIS. That is her home, and she wanted to come back to it.

Law explained to Us Weekly that Knight is an “adrenaline junkie.” Being out in the field and catching the bad guys is where she belongs, and that means the team that she left behind is the right one for you.

Now she is focused on her own path. She’s done worrying about what the men in her life think of her career decisions. She’s going after what she feels is right for her, which is how she ended up taking the Deputy Director position at the end of season 21 in the first place.

This is a great storyline, as it shows that you can go for a promotion and realize that it isn’t right for you. It’s possible to follow a job and enjoy it but realize that you’re not completely fulfilled. We get to see a character want to take a step down because that is where her heart is. There’s nothing wrong with changing your mind.

Of course, now we get to see an awkward reunion between Knight and Palmer. They can’t just pick up where they left off. Six months is a long time, and they need to discuss the elephant in the room.
