After NCIS season 23 episode 3 gave us the Halloween creeps and settled things between Nick Torres and Jess Knight, the new episode slows the pace a little. There is no more personal drama to deal with just now. The team is working on a case that seems simple at first, but soon throws twist after twist at them.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from NCIS season 23 episode 4

Agent Knight takes the central role in cracking this case, proving once again that she's both a talented negotiator and someone who cares deeply for others. And that's not all the new NCIS episode brings. The team also discovers an intriguing underground railroad behind all the madness.

Agent Knight takes center stage in NCIS season 23 episode 4

Agent Jess Knight showcases her skills to the fullest when interrogating Sergeant Molly Delgado. The only issue is that Molly can't be won over by interrogation techniques; she knows them all. Jess must earn Molly’s trust.

And she almost succeeds before the FBI barges in. Jess is sure that Molly is buying time for something, and she convinces Parker to create a diversion at the FBI headquarters so she can have a few more minutes with Sergeant Delgado.

Her determination to get to the bottom of things makes Molly admit that all she did was in self-defense and in an attempt to help — and that there's a mastermind behind it all. And it gets the FBI on board to conclude the case and arrest the real bad guy.

Will Knight get involved in the underground railroad to help women?

NCIS season 23 episode 4 feels more like a thriller than a regular crime case. It all starts with a missing Sergeant Molly Delgado. All good until the team needs to question the Deputy Attorney General Brett Gaines. Gaines claims Delgado broke into his house, stealing money, an antique pistol, and kidnapping his wife, Claire.

Digging through Molly Delgado's life, the team finds a book club she was part of. They think it's a criminal front, but on location, it looks like a regular book club. But when Molly turns herself in, she reveals the truth: the club is actually an underground railroad for abused women.

All Molly Delgado did was try to help Claire Gaines get away from her abusive husband and start a new life elsewhere. Molly was stalling during the interrogation with Agent Knight to buy time for the book club to move Claire. But the team, with the help of FBI Agent Rollings, go one step further — they set a trap for Deputy A.G. Gaines and arrest him at the book club.

Jess seemed so impressed by what the book club is doing for women that it makes fans wonder: Will she get involved with the underground railroad? She'll surely fit right in.

The next episode might not answer that question, as NCIS will crossover with NCIS: Origins. Still, fans can’t help but wonder if this experience will spark something new in Knight.

NCIS airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS.
