Thursday nights have been a joy when it comes to TV shows. One of the shows we’ve looked forward to is Matlock, and now eyes are on whether there’s a new episode of the series on tonight, Thursday, April 24. We have some bad news.
Sadly, there isn’t a new episode of the series on tonight. There isn’t a rerun on either. Elsbeth is moving forward an hour to take over the timeslot, and we’re going to be waiting some time for new episodes of the Kathy Bates series.
Don’t worry; there are no spoilers in this post for recent episodes of the series. We’re just looking at when Matlock will return.
Why isn’t Matlock on tonight?
This isn’t terrible news for fans of the series. Matlock hasn’t been pulled off the air. It’s just that the previous episode, which was a two-hour episode, was the season 1 finale. Now it’s time for the summer hiatus for this series.
It is a lot earlier than we would have usually expected. Most CBS fall shows will run until May, and we certainly expected that for this series with how popular it is. However, CBS decided to wrap it up early rather that put on more breaks in the schedule to stretch out the remaining episodes. There are only 19 episodes to the season compared to other Thursday shows that have 22 episodes.
Matlock season 2 is happening
Now for the good news. The season finale is just a season finale. This was one of the first series in he 2024–2025 TV season to land a renewal, showing just how popular it was from the start. It’s not a surprise with some excellent writing and Kathy Bates in the lead. It just means that she’ll have to wait for retirement!
The series is sure to remain as a fall show, so we’re expecting to see it arrive in September or October 2025. We’ll learn more about that at the May Upfronts in a few weeks.
