Don't expect a new episode of Matlock tonight, and here's why

Matlock is taking some time off from new episodes tonight, Thursday, Nov. 21. Here's why, and when it will return with new episodes.

Thursday nights have become all about Matlock. We’re ready to see Kathy Bates in the lead, especially as a character with some ulterior motives.

Matlock is more than a reboot. It is set in a world where the original series was a TV show. Madeline Matlock isn’t actually called Matlock after all. She’s a Kingston, using the popular name as a way to create a new identity and find out who was responsible for the death of her daughter.

The show has had a great run so far, landing the first renewal of the season. Now we’re ready to see more episodes, but there’s going to be a break in the schedule tonight, Thursday, Nov. 21.

What’s on instead of Matlock tonight?

The CBS series is taking a night off from both new and old episodes. That’s right; there won’t be a rerun tonight, either. Instead, CBS has a two-hour holiday special. Get ready for Nugget is Dead? A Christmas Story. This two-hour special follows the story of a woman who canceled her Christmas plans when she learns that her dog is sick.

With the show starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT, it means there isn’t room for an episode of Matlock. CBS will end the night with reruns of its two Thursday comedies, so it means there won’t be a new episode of Elsbeth either.

When will Matlock return with new episodes?

How long is this break going to be? It’s a somewhat longer one than we’d like, but for a good reason. There won’t be a new episode next Thursday instead, and that’s because it’s Thanksgiving. It doesn’t make any sense for the networks to air new episodes of shows on Thanksgiving. We saw The CW try once and the linear ratings took a huge dive because people don’t watch TV live when they’re with family or watching Thanksgiving football.

Instead, Matlock will return on Thursday, Dec. 5. We don’t have details of the episode yet, but we’re sure to see Matty continue her search for who was responsible for her daughter’s death. There has to be a point where she gets caught, where at least one person finds out. Could that be in the fall finale when it airs?

Matlock airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
