Only Murders in the Building does this thing where the story line takes so many turns and gets so many leads, that it can sometimes be hard to stay invested. Season 5 was beginning to feel that way too, but Only Murders in the Building season 5, episode 7 brought us some answers to burning questions, and it’s feeling like we’re on the verge of a true breakthrough in the case!

Charles confronts his catfish in Only Murders in the Building season 5, episode 7
Only Murders in the Building season 5, episode 7 picked up with Charles, Mabel, and Oliver on a mission to find out why Bash Steed was catfishing Charles via the Last Gasp dating app. Steed pushed for details about the case, and Charles naively delivered. Steed proved to be difficult to track down, seeing as though he has a house on each continent!
A lucky meeting with the mayor confirms the trio’s suspicion about Bash being involved in the murders of Nicky Caccimelio and Lester the doorman. The mayor shares that Bash is above the law, because he donates so much money to political campaigns and the NYPD.
The mayor’s loose-lipped venting session reveals that Bash and the other powerful CEOs involved in the case are having a secret meeting at Bash's country estate. The podcasters decide to crash this secret meeting incognito… only, the three are terrible at completing any mission unnoticed.
The podcasters uncover the suspects' hidden scheme
Camila, Steed, and Jay are up to a peculiar game of the Operation. After being caught spying, the podcasters make a deal with the extortionists. They agree to play a game called Celebrities—like Taboo, but the category is famous people.
Oliver flees the home in fear of what will happen if they don’t win the game, but Charles and Mabel continue. The deal is, if the podcasters win, the CEOs will tell them everything they know about the night of the murders. But if the podcasters lose, they will stop investigating the CEOs completely.
Thankfully Charles and Mabel win the game, referencing Oliver’s interesting encounters with celebrities to help their odds. As agreed, Bash reveals that on the night of the murder, in the Velvet Room, he, Camila, and Jay were betting on a contract to build New York’s first casino.
Whoever won the bet would have the chance to build the casino. We still don’t know what led to the murders, but what we do know is that the CEOs are responsible for stealing the severed finger from Charles’s apartment! With this new information, we can be certain the Camila, Bash, and Jay know a lot more than they confessed, and that they could potentially be the murderers.
One of the suspects switches sides on Only Murders In The Building
When Mabel tries to take the finger back, Camila pulls out a gun (that looks rather fake), but Mabel still returns the finger. At the very end of the episode, Jay has a change of heart when Mabel pressures him to do the right thing, and he helps Mabel and Charles escape from the home with the finger.
Things should start unraveling much more in the next few episodes!
