CBS new shows 2024: What we know about the Matlock reboot
Back in May 2023, Matlock was set for a fall 2023 premiere. However, things were delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes during the summer. That meant CBS had to change its plans, and the reboot was pushed to the 2024–2025 season.
Kathy Bates will star as Madeline Matlock in this gender-flip reboot. We’re certainly getting ready for this crime/legal drama to come to our screens, and here’s what we know about it so far.
What is the Matlock reboot about?
The series follows Madeline Matlock, who is ready to rejoin the work force. Of course, due to her age, a lot of people don’t think that she’ll be able to keep up, especially in a prestigious law firm. However, she uses those thoughts to her advantage. She’s not one to beat around the bush, and she will use her age as a way to expose corruption when people least expect it.
In the original series, Matlock usually worked to gain an acquittal by the jury in the courts. It remains to be seen if that’s going to be the focus for this new series, or whether the show will put the focus on taking the bad guys down. It certainly seems like the latter.
Who will star in Matlock?
Kathy Bates takes on the leading role of Madeline Matlock. Of course, she is sure to draw in plenty of fans to the series. She certainly makes it clear that age doesn’t mean women have to play nannies and grandmas. I do love the idea of the series putting the focus on people underestimating her, though, as it does happen in real life.
She’ll take on the nickname “Matty” in the series.
Matty is assigned to Olympia, who will be played by Skye P. Marshall.
Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian, works at the firm too. He will be played by Jason Ritter, and Julian gains an interest in Matty after seeing what she can do.
Julian is the son of the head of the firm, Senior, who will now be played by Beau Bridges. This role was originally given to Jamey Sheridan, but it looks like the delays with filming led to schedule conflicts. Senior is described as a man who changes the mood of the room when he walks in. His influence is mighty, and he certainly respects his ex-daughter-in-law a little more than his son.
Leah Lewis and David Del Rio will also star in the series.
Will the reboot premiere in fall 2024?
Now eyes are on when we’ll get to watch the reboot series. It is possible that this is planned for fall 2024. We have to remember that it was originally planned for fall 2023. It was going to air on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, hoping to get a good start following the football with The Equalizer following it the hour later.
Tracker wasn’t originally on the fall list. It ended up with a post-Super Bowl slot and it made that series the one to watch. So, it’ll be interesting to see if Matlock ends up taking a Sunday slot or finds a place elsewhere in the schedule.
