Everyone is getting together ready for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2 production. That is all but one. There’s a cast member leaving the show.

TVLine reports that Josh Stewart, who plays JJ’s husband Will LaMontagne, is leaving the series. He’s been with the show since the second season, popping in each season as he and JJ developed feelings and started a family together.

Criminal Minds: Evolution gave us more time with the characters’ personal lives, and that included JJ and Will together. There was a huge storyline for them inspired by AJ Cook’s real husband. Will shared that he potentially had cancer, although it turned out to be an inflamed thyroid.

Does Will actually have cancer in Criminal Minds?

Is it possible that Will told her a lie to prevent her from worrying about him? That seems unlikely. After all, Will has pushed JJ to tell him when she is walking into danger. And there’s no way he would want to go through something like this on his own.

It’s not clear whether Will is coming out in a permanent way. The show and Paramount+ haven’t spoken about Stewart’s announcement that he is leaving the series. It could just mean that there is more time focused on other characters and their personal storylines instead.

Alternatively, it could be that Will ends up the victim as an UnSub goes after family members of the BAU. It wouldn’t be the first time something like this happened. Remember Hotch’s wife, Haley? That is still heartbreaking, and the show could deliver us another major storyline.

Eyes are going to be on what to expect when the series returns. Things aren’t looking good for Will in Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2.
