The new season of Dr. Death is almost here. This time, we’re taking a look at Dr. Paolo Macchiarini. While he was know for his innovations, it turned out that he was pushing the boundaries of what was morally right.
Luke Kirby, Ashley Madewke, and Gustaf Hammarsten play composite characters in the series. They’re the doctors who help to blow the whistle on everything that was going on, but it would lead to some serious consequences for them.
In an exclusive interview with the three, I got to know more about these characters and what drew the actors into the show in the first place.
Meet the new characters in Dr. Death Season 2
Madewke started the introductions, sharing that she plays Dr. Ana Lasbrey, a brilliant surgeon who is ambitious and a Type-A personality. She is swept away by Paolo’s charm and commits to his research.
As for Hammarsten, he plays Dr. Svensson, a doctor and researcher. Unlike the other doctors, he isn’t a surgeon but he still plays an important role within the whole story. His focus is trials. Hammarsten did point out that while he’s not a surgeon on people, he’s a surgeon on rats.
“He’s a little surgeon,” Kirby had some fun with.
Of course, Kirby couldn’t help but point out that his character, Dr. Nathan Gamelli is a surgeon. He’s a moody (when doesn’t Kirby play a moody character?) ex-Patriot in Sweden. Gamelli is a cardiothoracic surgeon, getting “into the matters of the heart.”
Being pulled into the show and the characters
Actors will get a few projects that come their way. There’s always something that stands out for particular roles, so what was it about Dr. Death Season 2?
Madewke shared that she was already a fan of the show and the podcast that the series is based on.
"“I was excited to see the script for this season. They tell good stories. There’s the true crime element of it, but there’s also the human element of it.”"
For Madekwe, there’s also the journey that Ana goes on. This is important to pay attention to throughout the series.
Hammarsten shared that he hadn’t seen the first season. In fact, it was the storyline that was important. Being from Sweden, this was a little closer to his personal life than anyone else. Yes, he did end up at the hospital that Macchiarini was at! He had a sinus infection at the time that Macchiarini was at the hospital. That’s a scary thought!
Kirby second everything that his co-stars said. He also shared that he loved the storyline.
"“I thought the writing was very compelling. I liked the juicy story with Paolo and Benita. It felt creepy and fun.”"
