CBS is sticking with the procedurals when it comes to pilots so far. Why not, right? Einstein is the dramedy in pilot stage right now, and it’s just landed a Criminal Minds vet.
Matthew Gray Gubler has landed the lead in the new pilot. I think that means we’re all in for the ride now, right? While it does mean it’s harder to see him in Criminal Minds: Evolution, we are certainly around for him leading his own show!
What is Einstein about?
According to TVLine, the series is based on the German dramedy of the same name. In the German show, we follow Felix, played by Tom Beck, but in the American version we’ll follow Lew, Albert Einstein’s great-grandson. Lew is a tenured professor at Princeton. He should have job security, but then his bad boy antics land him in some trouble with the law.
He has to make a deal with the local police detective. He can avoid more trouble ifhe helps her solve her most puzzling cases. It really does feel like this is Spencer Reid in another life just reading that!
Lew also has the weight of his famous ancestor on his shoulders. Everyone expects him to be the same, which has led to some questionable decisions over the years. He doesn’t even show up for class all the time! Maybe now he’ll get some direction and purpose.
Einstein hails from the Monk creator
This is the second time an Einstein American reboot has been attempted. The original attempt was Albert’s illegitimate great-granddaughter, but that failed. Granted, this was in 2020, and we all know what happened then—it may have been some bad timing. This second attempt has Monk’s creator, Andy Breckman, behind it.
Even NBC attempted a version of the story back in 2018. That one also failed to get past the pitching stage.
For now, all eyes are on this latest attempt by CBS. We’re sold with Gubler in the lead.
