True Detective just wrapped up its fourth season, but will it be coming back to HBO? Find out here!
True Detective was a sensation when it debuted in 2014 on HBO. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were cops investigating a murder, with the series jumping back and forth in time and some fantastic elements. It was a monster hit and critical awards darling.
A second season was seen as a letdown, with a third getting little buzz. But in early 2024, HBO revived it with the title “Night Country.” The plotline focuses on a pair of Alaska cops (Jodie Foster and Kali Reis) investigating the murder of research scientists. It soon mixes a crime of the past with other twists and turns for a wild finale.
Despite a polarizing critical and viewer reaction, the show has been a huge success, with a total of 12.7 million viewers across HBO, Max, and other platforms. So, does this mean another season is coming?
What’s up for True Detective Season 5?
It’s been confirmed the show will indeed have a second season. TVLine broke the news along with the confirmation that writer/director Issa López will return as showrunner.
HBO Drama chief Francesca Orsi shared a statement on the renewal.
"“Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”"
Lopez herself added how happy she is to return for another year.
"From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with [HBO boss] Casey [Bloys], Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again."
With a new season only just ordered, there’s obviously no word yet on who will star or what it will be. It’s quite likely to be another anthology with a brand-new cast and storyline. Given the series’ past installments, HBO will likely be going for an A-list cast to build up more buzz.
So fans of True Detective are happy to know it will be coming back for another season of one of television’s most unique crime shows.
True Detective is available to stream on Max.
