Riley's dark past comes to light in Law & Order Season 23, Episode 3
Law & Order’s newest cop is about to get a special spotlight! Here’s a preview of this week’s episode that shows what happened to Reid Scott’s Vincent Riley!
The last episode of Law & Order saw the detectives investigating the murder of a tech CEO. The man had just created a revolutionary new form of artificial intelligence, one so advanced that he felt okay firing a few hundred people from his company and letting the AI do their jobs.
One worker took it too far to shoot the man and openly confessed to the detectives. However, his lawyer argued the confession was coerced to have it thrown out. She then pressed the CEO’s partner that he had the man killed to take over the company.
That man later provided Price with a video supposedly showing the accused shooting the victim. But Price was worried the video was faked and that allowing it to be entered into evidence was a slippery slope. McCoy overruled him.
The accused was found guilty, but Price felt they convicted the right man for the wrong reasons and what might happen if they could no longer trust the evidence in front of their eyes.
That was a pretty dramatic turn and this week’s episode looks bigger.

“Unintended Consequences” puts a spotlight on Detective Riley as a new murder reminds him of the cold case that drove him from the homicide department.
"When a young woman is strangled, Yee connects the MO to a potential serial offender, leading Riley to revisit a case that went cold on his watch. Price makes a risky move to bait one of their own on the stand."
It’s been hinted that something happened in Riley’s past that pushed him away from detective work, and this is likely it. That Price is going after him on the stand is a bit jarring and might muddle up the case even more.
It should be a fun showcase for Law & Order’s new cop and an intriguing new episode to boot.
Law & Order Season 23 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on NBC and streams on Peacock the following day.
