Magnum PI had its unplanned series finale this week. But did it end with Magnum and Higgins engaged, and what could have been for Season 6? Find out here!

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for the Magnum PI series finale

It’s important to remember that the Season 5 finale of Magnum PI was never intended to be a series finale. The producers had been expecting a sixth-season renewal, but sadly, NBC decided not to go through with it.

With production already finished, this meant the Season 5 finale would act as a series one. Thankfully, it didn’t have a huge cliffhanger, although it did leave off on an intriguing note. First, Episode 19, “Ashes to Ashes,” had Magnum and Higgins investigating an arson case while Kumu helped a person in trouble while working the hotlines for a crisis center.

Did Magnum and Higgins get engaged?

The final episode, “The Big Squeeze,” had Magnum and Higgins forced to work for Sam Bedrosian (Patrick Fabian), the sinister millionaire they clashed with back in Episode 16. However, Higgins was concerned as she had found a gorgeous ring in Magnum’s dresser. She confessed to Kumu she wasn’t sure she was ready for marriage.

After Higgins’s behavior marred the case, Magnum confronted her about her discovery. He then revealed that the ring was actually Rick’s as he was going to propose to Suzy. Higgins was relieved, which worried Magnum.

After the case was solved, they watched the proposal with Suzy saying yes. In the final moments, Magnum and Higgins talked it out, with Higgins saying that if Magnum ever proposed, she might just say yes. The pair then danced with their friends.

So that’s how Magnum PI ended, but what could have been for Season 6?

Could Magnum PI return?

Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Eric Guggenheim stated that there was never a definite plan for Magnum and Higgins to ever get engaged. "Season 6 was going to have some pretty big stakes, and everyone was going to be affected — especially Magnum."

He did share how a planned Season 6 would have had Rick and Kumu as partners in La Mariana while TC adjusted to Cade enlisting in the army.

Jay Hernandez finally broke his silence on the series ending on a social media post where he hinted he’d love to do a movie to wrap the show up.

That sounds like there were plans for a dramatic Season 6 which could be fodder for a film. The cast would surely enjoy reuniting for a true wrap-up to the series and give the fans the send off they deserved.

Both Guggenheim and Hernandez were thankful to the fans for the long run, so while it’s sad Season 6 of Magnum PI won’t be coming, there is hope that this won’t be the last we see of Magnum and his friends.
