There have been a lot of questions about whether Mark Harmon would ever return to NCIS. Well, we finally have a positive answer to the question.
Harmon played Gibbs in the flagship series from the beginning. In fact, he was Gibbs from the backdoor pilot in JAG. Since then, he has been a beloved character by fans, with many questioning how the show could continue without him. We saw how that was possible when Harmon left the flagship series just four episodes into NCIS Season 19.
Harmon hasn’t been back since. Not even the tribute episode to Ducky was even able to bring him back. However, we will get to see him again in a different NCIS series this fall.
Mark Harmon will be in NCIS: Origins
Deadline confirms that Harmon will appear in the premiere episode of NCIS: Origins. This prequel series is mostly going to be set in 1991, and it will tell the story of a younger Gibbs first joining NCIS after leaving the Marines and losing his wife and daughter.
We already knew that Harmon would narrate this series. Now we’ve found out that he will be in the first episode.
There are no details on how his appearance will play out. Considering this is a story about Young Gibbs, what’s the likelihood of him showing up at the beginning of the first episode to tell the story of how NCIS became a part of his life? Maybe he is telling a young person who wants to join up as a federal agent, or maybe he has met someone in Alaska and he’s telling them his life story.
So far, he will only be in the one episode. Never say “never,” though. If Harmon wants to be back and there is a way to write it in, we’ll see him.
NCIS: Origins premieres on Monday, Oct. 14 at 9/8c on CBS. It will move to the 10/9c timeslot the following week.
