A lot has changed over the years in NCIS. As Season 22 rolls around, we’ll see more changes. It looks like that could involve McGee moving up the career ladder.

The NCIS Season 22 premiere will tell us more about Jessica Knight and where she is now. It turns out that she’s in some trouble, and the rest of the team are going to be busy with other things making it harder to save her.

For McGee, it’s about his career future. This does seem a little contradictory to things in Season 19, so let’s take a look at what to expect.

McGee is eyeing up a promotion in NCIS Season 22

Back in Season 19, McGee had the chance to become the head of the team after Gibbs left. He turned it down, which meant that Alden Parker, played by Gary Cole, came in to lead the team.

However, McGee now wants a promotion. It’s not to the head of a team, though, which means that this isn’t really a hypocritical move. After all, it was easy to understand why McGee couldn’t step into Gibbs’s position considering the reason and way Gibbs left.

It looks like Knight’s career progression is playing on McGee’s mind. He wants to push for a Deputy Director position. Having Knight come into the team beneath him and get promoted above him may play on his mind. This isn’t the fact that it’s a woman, but that it’s someone newer to the team who has been given a promotion.

It looks like there is a Deputy Director position that has opened up, according to TVLine’s tease for the new season. This must be local as McGee wouldn’t likely move his family considering jobs and schools. The question is whether he’ll get it, or if he’ll realize that he does his best work with the team. It’s natural to think you want a position only to realize that it takes you away from what you love to do the most.

NCIS Season 22 premieres on Monday, Oct. 14 at 8/7c on CBS. It will move to the regular time of 9/8c the following week.
