The NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 DVD boxset has 28 minutes of features (and here's what I think)

We get roughly 28 minutes of bonus features with the NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 DVD boxset. Here's what I think of the way they're laid out and the quality of them.

The NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 DVD is out on Tuesday, Oct. 8. This is marketed as the final season because of CBS’s cancellation, but that doesn’t mean we, as fans, are giving up the fight. So, I refuse to call it “The Final Season.”

The boxset has around 28 minutes of bonus features. We also get all 10 episodes from the third season, and they’re great. We know what to expect from the episodes, right. They don’t need reviewing at this point.

I will share that the episodes are split across three discs. The first four episodes are on Disc 1, the next three episodes are on Disc 2, and then the final two episodes of the season are on Disc 3.

Money Honey
“Money Honey” – Captain Milius returns to Hawai’i as the NCIS team works to catch a dangerous high-value U.S. Government target with the help of an informant unlike any they’ve ever encountered. Also, Tennant and Daniel deal with Alex’s acceptance into the Naval Academy, on the CBS Original series NCIS: HAWAI’I, Monday, March 20 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. My one main issue with the NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 DVD boxset

Okay, I do have one issue with the way the bonus features are split across the DVD boxset. I want to get this out of the way, because it is my main gripe.

There are three separate bonus features. We get a gag reel, a featurette on the third season, and a look at NCIS: LA’s Daniela Ruah directing episodes in both the flagship series and Hawaii. I would prefer all the bonus features together on one disc, but that’s not the case with this release.

Ruah’s feature is on Disc 2, while the other two bonus features are on Disc 3. On top of that, it’s easy to miss Ruah’s feature. Instead of being a separate featurette from the main screen, you have to go into the individual episodes and click on the featurette. It’s under her episode that she did direct, and in a way that makes sense, but when you’re looking for a particular featurette, it’s best to keep them all together on one disc. Don’t hide it away!

Dies Irae
“Dies Irae” – When a figure from Tennant’s CIA past reemerges, the NCIS team seeks help from the most unlikely place in order to catch a killer who threatens to destroy everything Tennant has built, on the conclusion to the two-part second season finale of the CBS Original series NCIS: HAWAI’I, Monday, May 22 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. The bonus featurettes are a great look at behind-the-scenes

My favorite part of the NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 DVD bonus features is the gag reel. I love seeing the focus on the OG cast of the series. It looks like Vanessa Lachey had a few issues with pulling out her gun from the holster, which the whole cast found hilarious.

We get to see the cast have fun behind the scenes, and it’s so important to showcase that. For the longest time, there was always this stereotype of main casts not getting along, but it was always clear from social media that NCIS: Hawaii’s cast was a ohana. We see that with the gag reel.

The Ruah featurette was a great look at who much the cast loved her coming in to direct an episode. Being on her own NCIS series for so long gave her an insight into Hawaii that other guest directors wouldn’t get. Alex Tarrant has some wonderful things to say about having Ruah direct, and I urge you to watch the featurette purely for that.

The featurette that looks into Season 3 is heavily focused on Sam Hana coming into the story. This was likely created before the cast and crew knew the show was going to be canceled, so I will forgive them for the heavy focus on Sam. There is one part that stands out and it’s how Sam helped Whistler grow as a character, especially in her confidence. I did enjoy seeing the green FBI agent and the veteran NCIS agent working together to see how Sam would support Whistler, so having a look at that behind the scenes was important.

I just wish there was a featurette about the series as a whole. Considering this is supposed to be the “final season,” it would have been great to have the cast come together to talk about what made the show and the ohana so good. Talk about the different feel to the series, the takeaways from the show, and so Easter eggs for the fans. Other shows get their big goodbyes, so why not this one?
