SWAT boss promises no personal drama for Hondo (in a bad way)

With the news that Rochelle Aytes wouldn't return to SWAT Season 8 as a series regular, fans worried about Hondo and Nichelle. There won't be any personal drama to come,

“Legacy” – The team works with the DEA and their iron-jawed leader, Mack Boyle (guest star Timothy Hutton), to stop a ruthless cartel boss waging war on the streets of Los Angeles as he exacts revenge on those who killed his son, on part two of the sixth season finale of S.W.A.T., Friday, May 19 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. While Rochelle Aytes won’t return to SWAT Season 8 as a series regular, it doesn’t mean that we will see trouble for Hondo and Nichelle. That’s certainly something fans worried about when the news first broke.

Hondo and Nichelle have had a long journey to where they are now. There were questions about whether Hondo was ready to settle down, and work certainly didn’t help. However, the two gave it a go, and now they have a cute little family. Fans worried that Nichelle not being around much in SWAT Season 8 would spell trouble for them.

Hondo will keep his happy family in SWAT Season 8

When speaking with TVLine, showrunner Andrew Dettmann settled fans a little. He made it clear that while Nichelle won’t be featured as frequently, it doesn’t mean anything bad for her and Hondo. He made it clear that Hondo still has a wonderful family back home, and we shouldn’t expect any drama on the personal front for the team leader.

This makes sense. We don’t always see what’s going on at home, but that doesn’t mean something bad is happening. We can get catch-ups about Nichelle and their daughter. This is how a lot of other shows handle it because the actors playing wives and children aren’t always available.

It’s all about drama at work in SWAT Season 8

It means we’ll likely see a lot of drama at work for Hondo. He’s the one who brings Devin Gamble onto the team, and he says that she is a good person to have. This means the rest of the team will accept her, but does he know her full past?

Devin has a past that involves crime. Her parents were involved in crime, but Devin wanted to get away from all of that. It’s sure to come up, especially when people from Devin’s past show up. Will Hondo be able to protect her, or will he realize that he brought the wrong person onto the team?

SWAT Season 8 premieres on Friday, Oct. 18 at 8/7c on CBS.
