The Rookie is off tonight, but it will return in April 2024
The Rookie is taking the night off on Tuesday, April 16. In fact, it's taking a little longer off. Here's when it will return.
Tuesday nights are supposed to be about The Rookie, but there isn’t a new episode of the series on tonight, Tuesday, April 16. We do know when the show will return, though.
We go into this break after a major bombshell. After his past turned up, Tim made the decision to end his relationship with Lucy. He thinks that he’s doing the right thing to protect her, but she’s understandably angry. It’s stonewalling at its best, even if he doesn’t mean to do that.
Chenford fans out there—yes, I’m one of you—would love to see the two find their way back to each other. We’d love to see for them to work out, but that’s going to be easier said than done. It’s not going to happen in the next new episode, as we need to see Tim put through his paces first.

When will The Rookie return with new episodes
The new episode will air on Tuesday, April 30. We’re just going to get a new episode this month.
This break is likely linked to scheduling needs. There are only four episodes of the series left, and ABC will want to air finales in May as usual. This means breaks here and there. ABC tends to be a little more consistent with breaks, though, opting for a bulk break and then a string of new episodes rather than a week-on-week-off approach that some other networks opt for.
What to expect when The Rookie returns
We’ll get to see Tim knocked down to patrol. He isn’t going to be alone, either. Sgt. Grey has decided that he needs the precinct’s psychiatrist to shadow him. Danielle Campbell’s Blair will be a constant in Tim’s life when the show returns. It’s understandable that Grey is worried about Tim right now. While he’s acting how his older self probably would have, this isn’t the Tim we’ve come to know and love. We’re worried about him.
The breakup is the talk of the precinct, but this isn’t just about the breakup. Nolan brings up the fact that Tim has lied to his partner about something major. It will be hard to go back to trusting someone after that. And this could have an effect on Tim’s relationships with others in the workplace as they learn the truth.
