Tracker boss teases heartache for Velma in Season 2 (and we're not ready)

When we learned that Tobin Weigert wouldn't return for Tracker Season 2, we feared what it meant for another character. It looks like it's something devastating for Velma.

With Tracker Season 2 just around the corner, we’re ready to see what’s in store for the various characters. We have a tease for Velma, and it’s one we’re not ready for.

In a TVLine teaser, showrunner Elwood Reid shared that there’s “heartache” for Velma this year. It comes off the back of learning that Robin Weigert wouldn’t return to the series. Weigert plays Teddi, Velma’s wife, in the series.

Of course, we hoped that Teddi’s disappearance would be explained in some way that isn’t too heartbreaking for Velma. Maybe Teddi was out in the field doing something, or maybe she was away starting up some new business. There had to be something, right? It doesn’t look like it.

Will Velma mourn the loss of her wife in Tracker Season 2?

Velma and Teddi were so great in the first season together. While they are Colter’s handlers, it’s clear that they care deeply for him. They are like mothers toward him. We got a brief look at their life together here and there, and it was clear they deeply loved each other as well. That didn’t mean they always agreed, but they did love each other.

With Reid saying that Velma will go through some “heartache this year,” it would suggest that Teddi is making somewhat of a permanent exit. I can’t see that being Teddi leaving Velma by choice. Instead, I see it that something is going to cause Teddi to die off-screen, and we’ll see Velma mourn that loss.

One thing that this will bring out is some more time with Velma. We’ll get to learn more about her, and maybe we’ll get to see a young Velma and Teddi meeting and falling in love.

We will get to understand Velma and Colter's relationship more as she figures out her future.

"One of the goals is going to be understanding what her genesis with Colter was, and what she thinks her role could be going forward."

We’ll also get to see a friendship between Velma and Reenie form, as Reenie starts her own business. The characters haven’t really interacted with each other outside of Colter, which makes it a very different show to many others. Seeing the characters interact with others they haven’t always brings a new dynamic, and that’s going to be needed as we lose Teddi.

Tracker Season 2 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 13 on CBS.
