Putting a serial killer behind bars doesn’t stop him from being dangerous. Criminal Minds has shown us that plenty of times in the past. We can go all the way back to the first season to see that. Criminal Minds: Evolution has given us a reminder through Voit’s story.
Caution: This post contains spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, Episode 7
The episode focused on an individual case that had nothing to do with Gold Star. In fact, it was a breath of fresh air, and it captured what this show has been about from the start. Anyone else figure out what was actually going on and then break when they found out about the baby?
Rossi and Prentiss did put the focus on finding the white paper. Prentiss and Tyler brought in Dr. Jill Gideon, who was not interested in helping out at first. However, she came in at the end, and my heart broke for her as she went into Rossi’s office; the one that used to be Gideon’s.
But it was Voit who stole the show again. His scenes were minor in the overall episode storyline, but they are major for the season storyline. We get to see just how much power Voit still has.
Voit convinces his lawyer to go digging in Criminal Minds: Evolution
One thing we knew from the previous episode was that Voit knew more about North Star than he was telling Rossi. He wanted Rossi to figure it out, which is exactly what’s happened. Rossi has now gone down that rabbit hole, leaving Voit time to have his lawyer visit.
Voit needed to get a message to Damien. What better way than through his lawyer? You would think a lawyer would want to stay away from doing his client’s dirty work. There’s only so much a lawyer will get away with to work for his client. Digging up a briefcase in the middle of a wood is probably not on the list.
It’s clear that Voit set up some sort of test for his lawyer, though. He specifically told his lawyer not to open the briefcase even after giving the code. We don’t get to see what’s in there, but it’s potentially the unpublished white paper. Is it possible that Voit was behind Gold Star all along?
Voit still has power. He is also constantly multiple steps ahead of everyone else. While the pandemic helped him set up the system that he had when we met him in the first season, it’s clear that he has always planned and this is something he’s been working on for much longer. Just how much power does he have despite being locked behind bars?
