Will Trent Season 3 will not premiere until 2025, and it's a good thing

Will Trent Season 3 wasn't on the list of fall 2024 premieres. That's okay; being held until the midseason is a good thing for the series.

A lot happened in the Will Trent Season 2 finale, and we would love to pick up the third season right away. However, ABC has decided to hold Will Trent Season 3 until the midseason.

The earliest we’re getting the episodes is in January 2025. ABC didn’t confirm when the series would be back, though. This is pretty standard, and we usually find out premieres around November of each year. There are a few factors that go into the schedule of the midseason shows.

Holding the series to the midseason is disappointing for those of us who want to jump straight into new episodes. However, it could be a great thing for the series.

Will Trent fans are used to a midseason start

Think about it from a consistency point of view. Will Trent premiered in the midseason in both 2023 and 2024. Granted, the latter was linked to the strike action and almost everything premiered in early 2024, and it’s possible that the plan was to always put it on in the midseason. The linear ratings were good for a midseason lineup, but potentially not the best for a fall one.

Consistency is essential in the world of TV. Fans know when they’ll get to watch a series, and they get prepared for midseason starts.

A straight run of new episodes on ABC

Remember that thing about consistency being essential? Well, a midseason start is also great for the show in that regard once episodes air. ABC made a note that a midseason start allows for a lack of breaks in the schedule.

It’s not clear how many episodes there will be in the third season. The first season had 13 episodes and the second season was reduced to 10 due to the strike action. We could see a slightly longer season for the third, which allows for a January or February start and a straight run through to May. With a fall show, we’d have at least one break in the winter, and then we’d need to deal with an on-off schedule.

On top of that, Will Trent tends to be a shorter run because it works for it. It allows for an overarching storyline with standalone storylines of the week at the same time. The stories aren’t dragged down with length as writers try to find a way to extend storylines, and the standalone episodes don’t feel like fluff ones. It’s a win-win for everyone.
