We’ve got the first big casting for Boston Blue, and it's all about a Psych vet. Find out who’s joining the Blue Bloods spinoff!
It’s still amazing that in 14 seasons on the air, Blue Bloods never tried a spinoff. One would expect CBS to use the hit drama to craft some sort of “backdoor pilot” for a new installment. We all know the network loves franchises like NCIS and FBI, but somehow, CBS never wanted Blue Bloods to be a new franchise.
Now that the show is over, CBS appears to want to continue it after all with Boston Blue. Set to debut this fall, Donnie Wahlberg will reprise his role as Detective Danny Reagan who moves to Boston to aid the police force there. He’s teamed with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green, who starred in Star Trek Discovery), the daughter of Reverend Peters (Ernie Hudson), a longtime figure in Boston politics and law enforcement.
Now, Deadline reports that Maggie Lawson is joining the show with the Psych veteran once more stepping into the role of a cop!

Who is Maggie Lawson playing in Boston Blue?
Per the description, Lawson plays Sarah Silver, the “strong-willed and decisive Superintendent in the Boston Police Department who is Lena’s stepsister. Sarah is well aware of the tightrope she can walk sometimes between her job and her family.”
Lawson is best known for her role as Detective Juliet O’Hara on the long-running USA Network mystery dramedy Psych. She’s also had roles in Santa Clarita Diet, Outmatched, Two and a Half Men, Lethal Weapon, and more.
Lawson’s casting is interesting as it shows the Silver family is a blended one, which may cause a bit of conflict. There is going to be the role of younger son Isaac, a rookie cop who has yet to be cast.
This fuels the idea that Danny isn’t going to be the central character of Boston Blue but is more a side character and a way for viewers to get into the show as he interacts with the Silver family. There will also be how Danny is an outsider to Boston rather than being accepted as the son of NYPD royalty.
Obviously, Danny knows exactly how it feels to grow up in the shadow of a powerful policeman father and can help both Lena and Sarah navigate their issues.
Lawson is a good actress and the role sounds much different than Juliet as a tougher boss who has to handle family involved in cases. Her addition should only make Boston Blue another great entry in the Blue Bloods universe when it debuts this fall.
Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10/9c on CBS in fall 2025.
