We just knew that not everyone would make it through to the end of Reacher season 3. That didn’t mean we expected two deaths in one episode. We also almost saw Reacher caught in his duplicity in Reacher season 3, episode 5.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Reacher season 3, episode 5

The episode picked up off the back of the cliffhanger from episode 4. Duffy and Villanueva faced an ambush of McCabe’s men, and Reacher was trying to find any way to let them know. He did managed to save them, while making sure one of the men remained alive. After all, it would look suspicious if Reacher was the only survivor again.

However, Duffy left her badge on the ground. Reacher picked it up, but that almost got him caught. Why the hell would he put it in the pillowcase in his room? That didn’t make any sense for him to do at all. And I’m surprised that the guy looking around the room didn’t find it, although I bet he wasn’t as thorough at looking around a room as the other goons.

There’s a DEA tragedy in Reacher season 3, episode 5

While Duffy and Villanueva make it through alive, we learn that one of the DEA members won’t. Elliot really should have stuck to the rules. Of course the bodyguard was always going to have a plan to get out, and he knew Elliot was the week link. Sadly, Elliot deciding to let the bodyguard have a smoke led to Elliot being killed.

The bodyguard had a 10 minute head start, but Reacher was able to figure out a way to stop the guy in his tracks. With no cell phone, he would need to find a phone or steal a car to get back. The latter is what he did, so Duffy was able to shoot out the powerlines, giving Reacher a reason to get out of the house and help Villaneuva take down the bodyguard. I feel for Villaneuva losing his car in all this, though.

Surely this mission can’t remain off the books anymore, though. Someone is going to find out about Elliot’s death and how it happened, especially considering Duffy had to make the call to his family.

There’s a spy in the house in Reacher

It turns out that Reacher isn’t the only spy in the house. After shooting out the power, McCabe gets on the phone. It’s clear that there is a spy in the house considering someone killed Angel Doll and stole his laptop, and he wants to know who it is. That leads to McCabe’s goons searching all the rooms.

It’s not the badge in Reacher’s room that the men find, though. Beck holds up a phone that looks similar to the one Reacher has to contact Duffy. There was another federal agent in the house, and that agent was the French maid. I knew there was something about her, but I honestly thought it was going to be the British cook instead.

Sadly, the French maid doesn’t make it either. Paulie hit her and ended up cracking her skull and killing her. Reacher is angry, but he plays it off as if he wanted to interrogate her. Instead, he just wanted to be able to save her. What he does realize is that there’s no way Theresa made it out alive. If the maid was killed immediately for being a fed, there is no way that Beck or McCabe would allow someone like Theresa to stay alive once she had no information to give. That’s heartbreaking but necessary for Duffy to hear.

Reacher airs on Thursdays on Prime Video.
