Sheriff Country season 1 won't come back in January 2026 (but it's not all bad news)

When it comes to Friday nights, CBS has the win. It’s a night of crime and first responders, and it all starts with Sheriff Country. Unsurprisingly, the series has hit well with viewers, and now we’re ready for more.

There is some bad — but expected — news tonight, Friday, Dec. 26. There isn’t a new episode, as the series went on its winter break on Friday, Dec. 19. That’s normal, and we usually get a few weeks off, with shows coming back in January.

That’s not the case for the CBS shows in 2026, though. However, it’s not all bad news, as there’s a lot to look forward to.

Why isn’t Sheriff Country returning in January?

CBS has made the decision to hold off all shows until the Winter Olympics are over. That means we have to wait until the end of February, with some of the shows not coming back until March. It all depends on how the week falls.

In some good news, we’ll get Sheriff Country back on Friday, Feb. 27 at the usual time of 8/7c on CBS. It’ll continue the great night of crime and first responder drama, with Fire Country and then Boston Blue following on.

While it initially seems like bad news for us because we have to wait, especially after that cliffhanger, it’s actually good news. We have a more consistent schedule when the show does return. Anything returning in January will need to take a few weeks off for the Winter Olympics, as it doesn’t make sense for scripted content to go up against such a major sporting event. It also means that a few weeks of the schedule are filled, so there is an on-off schedule on the other side of the return.

With CBS holding everything off until February, there’s no extra break, and the schedule will remain more consistent until the May finales. It’s a win-win for us!

Sheriff Country has already been renewed for season 2

It’s not like we have to worry about the ratings for this one, either. CBS has already renewed Sheriff Country for a second season, and yes, we’re sure it will return in fall 2026.

The renewal wasn’t surprising news, as CBS has often given out early renewals to freshman shows that are performing well. The series is currently the seventh-rated show on CBS in the demo, sitting just behind Matlock. It sits in fifth place when you consider the total audience numbers, which is even better! While the demo is essential for the advertisers, the total audience numbers tell CBS just how many people are tuning in.

It only made sense for the series to be renewed, and it sets the standard for the rest of the season for CBS.

Sheriff Country will return on Friday, Feb. 27 at 8/7c on CBS.
