SWAT won't get any more new episodes in 2024 (but here's when season 8 returns)

SWAT season 8 is officially on its winter break. When will the series return in 2025? There is some important information to keep in mind.

“Gang Unit” – When a spree of brutal stash house robberies spills into L.A., 20-Squad must team up with the sheriff’s department’s gang unit to unmask a violent crew who leaves no witness alive, on S.W.A.T., Friday, Oct. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. We would love more episodes of SWAT to get us through the winter, but that’s not going to happen. The previous episode was the last one in 2024.

We’re not getting into the details of the winter finale. We’re not that mean! You have time to catch up before the series returns in 2025. At least we know when the show will be back, but there is some important information about the return.

When is SWAT back with new episodes?

SWAT season 8, episode 9 will air on Friday, Jan. 31. Yes, the series is returning in January, but only just! Due to the later winter finales for CBS compared to other networks, it’s not that surprising to find out that the return dates are later in January.

This is arguably a good thing. It means there are fewer needs for breaks later in the year. The schedule shouldn’t be as on-off as other networks will need to do.

We don’t have details for SWAT season 8, episode 9 just yet. That’s not surprising with the wait we have on our hands.

SWAT is moving to a later timeslot

Fridays will see a small change. With Blue Bloods coming to an end in 2024, the later timeslot is now open. CBS has decided to move SWAT into that later timeslot.

This could be a mistake. The series isn’t getting the same following that it once had—and that could be due to the decision to write out some fan-favorite characters and all the U-turns on the future of the show—and the 10 p.m. ET/PT timeslot is usually the trickiest one. Blue Bloods fans were extremely loyal, bucking the trend for the latest timeslot.

Instead of SWAT kicking off Friday nights, we’ll get the second season of NCIS: Sydney. It will be interesting to see how they move works out, especially considering the series was always originally meant to be a streaming show. We would have loved to see NCIS: Hawaii renewed and get a final season to say goodbye to the ohana.

SWAT will return with new episodes on Friday, Jan. 31 at 10/9c on CBS. Catch up on Paramount+.
