Thanks to SWAT getting a warning about coming to an end, there was a chance to wrap up a lot of storylines. However, there was one in particular that didn’t get an ending, and it needs to be revisited in the SWAT Exiles story.
As 20-Squad’s story came to an end, there was a lot of focus about family. Hondo knew that he couldn’t do the job without his team, and that included one member he considered ousting just an episode early. Devin Gamble had made a decision that went against SWAT, but it was necessary for her family.
In the end, Gamble’s story was left open, and it’s something that Annie Ilonzeh talked with ScreenRant about. She’s right when she says that it’s something that needs closure.

Devin Gamble’s SWAT ending explained
In the SWAT season 8 penultimate episode, Gamble realized that her brother Leon had been in with the bad guys. She had to arrest him, but when it came to it, she couldn’t go through with it. As she told Hondo that she needed to resign because she couldn’t be a good cop and a good sister at the same time, he agreed that that was the right thing to do.
In the end, though, he changed his mind and wanted Gamble back. She also came back to SWAT, and we learned in the SWAT series finale ender that she did so with a heavy heart about her family. Leon was still in the wind, and her mom wasn’t speaking to her because of her decision to still be a cop. Her family was blaming her for her brother’s actions.

SWAT Exiles needs to revisit the Gamble storyline
We know that there is a SWAT spinoff in the works. This does come across as a rushed project, with the initial news saying that there were no intentions of including any of the flagship characters. However, that’s slowly changed, with the potential of some of the SWAT characters returning.
One that desperately needs to come back in Ilonzeh, so that Gamble’s arc can be revisited. This could easily be done by having Leon show up as the suspect in one of Hondo’s newest cases. Realizing who he is after, he could turn to Gamble for help on this matter, allowing that entire storyline to be wrapped up and for Gamble to get the closure she deserves.
Ilonzeh is happy to return to SWAT Exiles, as well. She has routinely said how it’s been one of her favorite shows to work on, and if there was the offer to come back to wrap up this arc, she would be there for it. So, now we just need the story to be written in.
SWAT is available to stream on Paramount+ and Netflix.
