We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is the latest book being adapted into a TV series. You’ll get to binge-watch all episodes of the series on Wednesday, June 18 on Prime Video, and it’s tempting to look out for all the spoilers before you do. After all, this book has source material, so you want to know some of the things to expect.

If you are going to read the book first, I suggest you do it without knowing any of the twists. It’s the twists that leave you wanting more, and you won’t see a lot of them coming because the writing for them is done well.

The basic premise of We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I will go into the basics of the story, though, and it’s mostly what we know from the TV series trailer. Cadence Sinclair Eastman is the eldest granddaughter of Harris and Tipper Sinclair. The couple only had daughters, although all Harris ever wanted was a son, and every summer, the families come back to the island to spend time together.

Every summer, Cadence resents the idea of going to the summer. The only thing that she looks forward to is seeing Gat, who is the nephew of her aunt’s boyfriend, Ed. Despite being together for nearly a decade, Carrie won’t marry Ed because of how racist Harris is. She doesn’t want to be cut out from the family inheritance.

There are some deeply annoying elements to the story when it comes to Harris’s view of people. He’s sexist, racist, and classist, and you kind of want something to happen to him throughout the book. I’ll leave you to read it to find out if it does.

During Cadence’s 15th summer at the island, things change. She is found on the beach, injured and alone. All she remembers is being in the water and hitting her head. Now she is back two years later and determined to find out what happened to her.

That’s all I’m telling you. It really is a story to read without knowing how it ends or what really happened to Cadence. I can tell you now that it’s not what you’re initially thinking.

We Were Liars is a binge-watch on Prime Video

I don’t like binge-watch releases. I think they put a lot of pressure on people to watch, and sitting in front of the TV for so long isn’t good for you. However, this is one of those shows that works as a binge-watch release. There are teases of things to come, and you’ll find yourself needing to watch the next episode to get to the twists.

That’s the way the book is as well, and it’s why you want to go into this story without knowing anything. Should you read the book before watching the show? If you have the time, yes. If you don’t, then wait for the show and then jump into the book to see the changes to the story.

We Were Liars will come to Prime Video on Wednesday, June 18.
