It all seemed like it was going to be another perfect summer for the Liars in We Were Liars, but that changed. Summer Sixteen was the year that friendships were broken.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for We Were Liars episode 1.

The new Prime Video series opens with something that we already know from the trailer. Cadence is on the beach, washed up with a head injury. In fact, the traumatic brain injury is so bad that she has no memory of the events that happened during Summer Sixteen.

We start the series with the opening of Summer Sixteen. The Sinclair women gather ready to celebrate Father’s Day with their dad, and it’s clear that their perfect lives really aren’t that perfect.

The Sinclair daughters all have their own relationship trouble in We Were Liars episode 1

We’re introduced to the relationship drama of two of the Sinclair daughters. Bess is struggling with her husband not returning her calls or wanting to speak with her. She wants to know what she has done wrong, but she doesn’t want people to think that her marriage is in trouble.

Meanwhile, Penny, Cadence’s mom, is in the middle of a divorce. Cadence doesn’t have a lot of great things to say about her dad, and the divorce is fresh for all. Cadence is angry that this is the first Father’s Day without him, and she would love for that to change.

Then there’s Carrie, who has started a relationship with a new man. He is more than welcome into the family, but it’s clear there is some sort of history there. We won’t get to know for a little longer, though.

Cadence and Gat have history from Summer Fifteen in We Were Liars

On top of that, we learn that Cadence and Gat fell for each other during Summer Fifteen. Cadence believes that there was more to this, but Gat is pulling away from her. She sees that he puts a flower into a letter, but then she doesn’t end up with that, and she’s confused by it. Why would he decide not to give her the flower?

That’s something we’ll have to wait to find out, but it’s clear that something Gat has done is a cause for tension among some of the other Liars.

In the end, Cadence and Bess seem to be happy together. They do seem to want to start a relationship, but there is still something hanging there. It doesn’t help that we know everything will change, as at the end of that summer, Cadence was found on the beach alone, and she has no idea what happened to her. Did Gat do something?

The very end of the We Were Liars series premiere, Mirren catches her mom in a shed sleeping with one of the boat boys. She’s shocked, but runs away from the situation, now not knowing what to do about it. What will she do? Will she tell her dad when he finally turns up?

What she didn’t see was that her dad didn’t make it in on the last flight, despite saying that he would. Bess had waited at the dock for him, only to question what was wrong with her. The boat boy clearly doesn’t think that there’s anything wrong with Bess.

We Were Liars is now available to stream in full on Prime Video.
