It’s time for Cadence to start remembering some of the events from Summer Sixteen. It’s time to break down the events of We Were Liars episode 2.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for We Were Liars episode 2.
We pick up shortly after the events of the night Cady was found on the beach alone. She wakes in the hospital about a month later, and from there, we learn that she suffered from migraines and memory loss. Everyone turned away from her, and she didn’t hear from Johnny, Mirren, or Gat after the events.
After missing a summer due to going to Europe, at the insistence of her mom, Cady returns to Beechwood Island. Clairmont has changed completely, showing off New Clairmont, a house that is a monstrosity.

Father’s Day celebrations happen in Summer Sixteen in We Were Liars episode 2
We get a look at the fanfare that is given to Harris for Father’s Day. There is a lot of work put into this, giving us a look at the egotistical nature of Harris Sinclair. There’s a bittersweet moment at the end of the festivities, as Carrie points out that none of them will ever be the favorite daughter, as they all grew up and got messy. The favorite daughter is Rosemary, the one who died at the age of eight.
That’s certainly the case in the past. However, things are changing in Summer Eighteen. The house has changed, and it’s clear that Harris isn’t the man that he once was.
Cady starts to remember Summer Sixteen in We Were Liars
Throughout the episode, all Cady wants to do is remember the events of the summer that ended with her TBI. She goes back to the island, where everything has changed, but she does start to get flashes of memories.
It turns out that the flower in the letter was never meant to be for Cady. Gat was giving it to another girl, a girl who he met while on vacation who happens to live close to him. He’s falling for her, but he couldn’t even bring it to himself to tell Cady about her at first. Instead, he let Cady think that something good was happening between them. It’s no wonder Johnny was on at Gat for being a bad guy.
Gat is turning into an angry teenager as he realizes a few things about Clairmont and Beechwood Island. The other Liars don’t pay any attention to the help. They don’t care about anyone who isn’t white, and the only reason Gat is part of their group is because his dad is with Carrie. He uses some of this as his reason for being with someone else and not fully wanting to give his heart to Cady.
Meanwhile, Ed is welcomed into the family by Harris, showing that he is welcoming to someone of a different color. But is he? Everyone else seems a little shocked by this.

Cadence sees the other Liars at Beechwood Island
After not talking to her for two years, Cady finally sees the other Liars. They are staying away from New Clairemont, calling it a monstrosity, so they have decided to remain at Bess’s estate in Cuddletown. Cady finds them hanging out in the woods, where they explain that Cady’s mom explained that they couldn’t tell Cady what had happened. She has to remember it all on her own.
There are some pointed looks, especially from Gat, who clearly looks guilty about something. Maybe it’s guilt just about the way things ended between them in Summer Sixteen, or maybe he did something to Cady and doesn’t want her to remember things. He keeps looking at her every time Cady sees them, while Johnny and Mirren ignore her a lot of the time.
All Cady wants is for the others to tell her what happened, but her mom refuses to allow that. The doctors have said that it’s better for Cady to remember on her own so as not to overwhelm her with the memories. It’s going to take a few more episodes for her to remember, but she has got to an important part for the whole family at the end of We Were Liars episode 2.
While the Sinclair daughters and their mom chat around a fire and talk about which one is the favorite daughter, matriarch of the family, Tipper, dies silently in her chair. Penny tries to wake her mom up, thinking that she fell asleep, as the other two daughters start to walk back to the house, but it’s soon clear that Tipper has died. We end with the three daughters, Cady, and Johnny rushing toward Tipper as Harris drops his drink inside and rushes out.
