Following Harris cutting his daughters off during Summer Sixteen in We Were Liars, the Sinclair sisters have to figure out a way to get their dad’s approval back. Meanwhile, Cady figures more out from that fateful summer, and Ed decides to propose.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for We Were Liars episode 4.
Out of all the men in the Sinclair sisters’ lives, Ed is the best one. It’s also clear that he and Carrie love each other, and they are there for one another. Ed is even there for Johnny, so why does the episode end with a disappointing answer to the proposal?
Carrie turns Ed down in We Were Liars episode 4
July 4 is a big day for the people on Beechwood Island, but Ed shares that usually he and Carrie sneak away to enjoy the fireworks privately. This year, Ed wants to propose, and Johnny gives his soon-to-be stepdad his blessing.
So, what goes wrong? Carrie decides to say no, and Ed is completely confused. Harris had also previously given his blessing, and the two were on the same page about dealing with Johnny’s issues. Why would Carrie decide that they couldn’t be married?
This has to have something to do with an earlier conversation between Carrie and Harris. She turned to her dad to explain that she did need help financially. Her trust fund was gone, but not because she hadn’t done anything with herself. She and Ed had money saved, but they needed to use it to help get Johnny out of some serious trouble. Harris must have put some strong stipulations on the money he was willing to offer, and considering Johnny is the only male in the family, of course he would help the boy.

The Sinclair sisters fight for Harris’s approval in We Were Liars
Meanwhile, the Sinclair sisters attempt to make their mom’s famous pie for the July 4 party. This is an attempt to get their dad’s approval again, but it’s clear that none of them really know how to bake. They barely know their way around the kitchen, because they didn’t spend time learning from their mom.
Arguments start between the sisters, as Penny breaks down. She’s struggling to deal with the breakdown of her marriage and what that meant for her and Cady. Bess claims that all of Penny’s tears are fake, but Carrie blasts Bess for her words. Bess wasn’t always the youngest sister, and it’s time she remembers what it is like being a big sister. Carrie isn’t babying Penny but being there for her sister.
It also turns out that Bess has been lying to everyone. She has spent all the money from her trust fund, so it’s no wonder she’s also trying to get her father’s approval again.
Considering the way we see the sisters during Summer Seventeen, it looks like things mend between them. Was it the fateful summer, or has something else happened during the year that’s helped them realize that they all needed to change their ways?

Cady finds Johnny’s phone in We Were Liars episode 4
Meanwhile, Cadence continues to figure out what happened, and she’s sure that it had something to do with Johnny. So, she decides to do some digging, finding his phone and figuring out his passcode. Of course, he’s a 16-year-old boy and it’s “696969.”
That’s when Cady finds a video of Johnny fighting with someone. It’s no wonder that all the tennis players who turn up at the Liars’ party during Summer Sixteen are all against Johnny. He did something to hurt someone, and this has to be the legal trouble that Carrie has had to get him out of.
Carrie walks in while Cady is looking at the phone. Johnny is behind her and he tries to get his phone back, but Carrie takes it, in shock at what she’s seeing. While she knew of her son’s troubles, maybe she didn’t know just how serious everything was.
Now the Liars are all turning against each other. Johnny is quick to tell Mirren and Gat what Cady has done. Will any of them help her figure out what happened in Summer Sixteen now?
