There’s a hunt for William in We Were Liars episode 5, as everyone argues among themselves. Is Cadence any closer to figuring out what happened during Summer Sixteen?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for We Were Liars episode 5.

With the three sisters all having their own needs for Harris’s money, they find themselves at each other’s throats. This leads to the Liars all falling out, as secrets come out and lives are put at risk. Is this why the other Liars didn’t get in touch with Cady over the last year?

A constant battle for Harris’s money in We Were Liars episode 5

We continue to see just how awful each of Harris’s daughters are. Carrie is the only one that I can offer a little bit of grace to, because her actions have been to protect her son. It’s less scandalous and frivolous than the others, but it’s still something Harris is going to look down on everyone about. What Harris doesn’t realize is that his narcissistic ways have led to his daughters becoming this.

However, we see how the Liars are dragged into it all. Johnny continues to act suspiciously during Summer Sixteen, and he’s still not sharing anything in Summer Seventeen. He does eventually tell Gat everything that happened. It turns out that there was a fight and now Johnny is being blackmailed with the video getting out. That’s what the money has been for.

Bess isn’t happy when she sees Cadence with the jade hairclip that belonged to Tipper, and immediately questions how she managed to get it. What she doesn’t realize is that Penny sent Cadence to play to Harris’s softer side, but Harris saw right through it. Rather than hand over the whole of the jade collection, she got the hairclip.

So, Bess needs to find another way to get the money. She decides to tell Penny all about seeing Cady and Gat on the beach, realizing that there is something more going on between them. Sure enough, Gat tells Cady that he loves her and not the girl back in New York. He hasn’t been able to get Cady off his mind, and it looks like the two are going to be official.

Penny isn’t happy about this, and decides that the rule of “no boyfriends on Beechwood” should probably be implemented again. Since Gat’s uncle, Ed, is no longer on the island, there’s no need for Gat to come along either. Cady is understandably angry, especially when she finds out that Bess told Penny everything. Cady decides to tell Penny all about Bess sleeping with a boat boy.

The Liars fall out in We Were Liars

Well, that goes down as you would expect. Since Penny learns that Mirren saw it all and told Cady, she decides to tell Bess everything and threatens to expose her affair. Bess screams at Mirren, destroying all of her artwork that she just put her soul into, and belittles her. I haven’t really liked Bess from the start, but she goes way too far in this and I actively hate her. I want to see her destroyed in life!

The way she destroys her daughter’s artwork and tells her that she can’t ever go to art college considering there’s no money is unnecessary. None of this is Mirren’s fault, and Bess shouldn’t be putting her problems with her husband on Mirren.

Of course, Mirren lashes out at Cady, since Cady was the one to tell Penny. Mirren doesn’t want to listen to what Bess did, because she believes that Cady should have had her back. They were supposed to be tight, and now Cady has decided not to keep the secret.

However, all of that is going to have to wait, as William has gone missing.

Johnny and Gat risk their lives to find Will in We Were Liars season 1, episode 5

While everyone else is arguing between themselves, Johnny and Gat are making sure all the kayaks and boats are tied down for the storm that has rolled in. There’s one missing, and suddenly, Johnny realizes that his brother is also missing. At the start of the episode, Will had wanted to go out on the water and Johnny blew him off, so Will has gone out alone.

Johnny and Gat take a boat to go in search for Will. While they find him, the storm has rolled in harsh, and it looks like Johnny is going to end up drowning while saving his brother.

Fortunately, word gets back to Harris that Will is missing, and he arranges for the coastguard to be called. The coastguard (and Ed) pick up Will, Johnny, and Gat, getting them back to Clairmont safely. Harris offers Ed the chance to stay, as he decided to leave the island after the breakup with Carrie, but Ed makes it clear that he needs to go back. The boat is waiting for him.

Just as it looks like Johnny is going to take all the praise for saving Will, Johnny decides to share how Gat was a major part of it. He was the one to think on his feet. Harris is angry, as it’s clear he’s no impressed that the boy who isn’t family is the one who keeps stepping up.

Cady tries to trigger memories in Summer Seventeen

Meanwhile, in Summer Seventeen, Cady is going to extreme lengths to trigger her memories. She jumps off the rocks into the water below, despite Mirren telling her not to do it. While she stays under the water, Gat and Johnny go in to get her and pull her up.

Penny is angry that her daughter would do this, believing that Cady is having suicidal thoughts. Instead, Cady points out that she just wants to remember things, and that’s what she’s trying to trigger. It would be much easier if Penny told her everything that happened.

Well, it turns out that Penny did try telling her daughter the events that she knows. However, Cady would get overwhelmed, have a seizure, and then wake up not remembering anything Penny told her. Eventually, Penny realized that her daughter did need to remember on her own, and that’s what is starting to happen. It’s just confusing for her as memories come back in pieces.
