During the previous episode, Harris made it clear that he didn’t think any of his children or grandchildren deserved their inheritance. In We Were Liars season 1, episode 6, he tries to set them up against each other and to fail.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for We Were Liars episode 6.

We get a look at Clairmont and the Sinclair family through Gat’s eyes. It all starts with him coming to the island for the first time when he was nine, quickly taking part in the lemon hunt, only to realize that it was always going to be stacked again him. It’s no wonder that he’s turned into a bitter man, as the Liars figure out the type of man their grandfather is.

Harris doesn’t like to be questioned in front of other people, just like a true narcissist. He also doesn’t like to be made a fool of, and the Liars certainly make him look the fool during the Summer Sixteen lemon hunt.

Harris sets an impossible hunt in We Were Liars episode 6

The lemon hunt was Tipper’s tradition, and this year, Harris decides to continue it with a twist. Many of the rules that Tipper put in place for safety reasons are thrown out, and the prizes are much bigger. The person who finds the most lemons will get the Boston house, and the person who finds the lime will get Clairmont.

Of course, Penny, Carrie, and Bess are desperate to find the lemons and lime, and they get their children involved in it. At first, Cadence, Johnny, and Mirren join in on their moms’ plans, but Gat is the one who is able to talk them all out of it.

Gat’s mom shows up, and he shares about how at the first lemon hunt, he won, but Harris decided that he had to have cheated. Harris has always been a racist piece of work, and Gat has to do a lot of code switching to fit in. It’s something his mom notices when she turns up, and while she understands it, she’s not happy about it. With Ed no longer there, maybe it’s time for him to go home.

It doesn’t help that Gat sees Harris locking the lime in his desk draw. There was never an intention to give Clairmont over, and he tells the Liars this. So, they decide that it’s time to play Harris at his own game.

They all hand their lemons over to Gat and he gets into Harris’s office to get the lime out of the draw. As you would expect, Harris declares that there had to be some cheating going on, and that means all the hunt is null and void.

Harris finds a way to get Gat off the island in We Were Liars

However, Harris still wants Gat gone. He doesn’t like the fact that Gat and Cady are falling for each other. As the eldest grandchild, Cadence is the heir to so much, and Harris doesn’t want a brown boy being there as well. While he doesn’t say it, he is racist, but he has to do things covertly to avoid being called out.

The best way to do that is to find out what Gat’s personal dreams are. When he says that he wants to be a foreign correspondent, Harris can set up a plan. Tipper had a scholarship, and Harris decides that he will put Gat’s name forward for it. Gat has an interview in two days, which means he needs to leave that night to make it back to New York.

At first, Gat doesn’t want to do it, realizing that it’s just another way for Harris to control the situation. Cadence talks him into it. If Harris is really going to play this game, then Gat may as well get something from it in the process.

So, Gat heads to spend some time with Ed before going to New York, and some of Ed’s words make Gat rethink everything, especially finding out that Harris invited Gat’s mom and it wasn’t at Carrie’s invitation. He needs to get back to Beechwood, but there’s an issue. Something has happened that has called the coastguard out. There are no boats back to Beechwood right now.

What has happened back at Beechwood? We need the next episode to find out.

Cadence hallucinates a date in We Were Liars

While all this is going on, in Summer Seventeen, Cady decides that she needs to get to the mainland to go to the library. Gat goes with her, and they enjoy a date while Cady tries to research the events that happened the previous summer.

However, at the end of the day, Gat makes it known that Cady never did leave the island. He doesn’t even remember the ice cream or their first real date. It was all in Cady’s head, so now we have to be worried that she’s hallucinating as well.
