After the climactic end of We Were Liars episode 6, the penultimate episode of the season brought a few answers. Cady starts to remember a lot more about the end of Summer Sixteen.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for We Were Liars season 1, episode 7.
The penultimate episode picked up just shortly before the incident at Beechwood Island that sent the coastguard out. It was time for lunch, with the moms and the Liars in attendance. The Littles were in Boston, and Harris wasn’t too happy that one of the Liars didn’t go with them, opting for a staff member to go instead.

Of course, lunch turns into what you would expect. The moms all start going off at each other, bringing up topics of the recent and earlier past. Penny is able to stay out of most of the mud slinging, as Bess and Carrie are the ones trying to turn Harris against each other.
Bess tries to point out that she had no idea what her husband was doing with her trust fund, and she even says that Harris trusted him as well. Harris points out that the only reason he trusted his son-in-law is because Bess did, and clearly, he was wrong to trust her judgment.
At the same time, the truth about Carrie and Ed come out. Carrie wanted to say yes to Ed, but it turns out that Harris gave her an ultimatum. If she wanted the money to protect Johnny, then she had to kick Ed out of the family. Cady is able to put all the pieces together and the other Liars figure it out as well. Harris won’t even say Ed or Gat’s names, and Cady accuses him of being racists, without actually saying those exact words.
In fact, Cady brings up that lemons were a symbol of colonization. Penny tries to brush that off saying that it’s something Cady is learning in AP history, Cady points out that she’s learning about it because Gat opened her eyes up to the world.
With all that, Harris makes it clear that he has his final will all figured out. He has now decided who will get inheritance, and it’s what they all deserve. He takes Cady outside to talk to her, because as the eldest grandchild, she is the heir to a lot, and he wants to make sure she understands that. However, in their argument, he trips down the stairs and hits his head hard. He is the reason the coastguard is called out.

The Liars have a party at Clairmont in We Were Liars
As the three moms head to the hospital with Harris, the Liars are left at the house alone, with Gat returning as he wants to make sure everyone is okay. It’s the first time they have been left on the island unattended, and they need to figure out what to do. Well, at first, they decide they will clean up.
This has some great moments, with Mirren causing the dishwasher to completely overflow and all of them making a bit more of a mess before finally cleaning it all up. Cady does as her mom asked to find the will to see what they were left with, but the question is whether she would burn it if Penny and Cady weren’t left with what Penny wanted.
After cleaning, the Liars decide to just have a bit of fun, and it leads to the ivory elephants being broken. The first is, admittedly, an accident by Johnny, but then Mirren breaks one on purpose. The elephants are a symbol of Harris’s wealth, and they’re done with all of that.
Well, Cady points out that Clairmont is a symbol of everything. She pulls out the will and they all decide to look through it. Bess is getting the Boston house, which she hates, because she hates Boston. Carrie will get a stipend as long as she never marries to protect Johnny. And it turns out that Cady is being left Clairmont. Well, the Liars decide to burn the will, and then they get onto the topic of Clairmont.
Cady gets a “bright” idea. What if they burn Clairmont to the ground? Once the house is gone, everyone else will be happier. The inheritance is gone, and that means Harris’s power over them all is gone. After a bit of a debate, the other Liars agree that they should burn it all to the ground.
So, in Summer Seventeen, Cady realizes that Summer Sixteen ended with Clairmont burning to the ground. That’s why new Clairmont has been built.
There’s still one question, though. How did she end up in the water? We need the We Were Liars season 1 finale to find that out.
