Throughout We Were Liars, all Cadence wanted to do was figure out what happened to her during Summer Sixteen. All the answers came out in the We Were Liars season 1 finale, and it was far more heartbreaking than ever expected.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for We Were Liars season 1, episode 8.

The final episode picked up off the back of Cady realizing that she and the other Liars had set fire to Clairmont. Seeing it as the reason the Sinclairs were so at war with each other, they all decided that it was best just to get rid of it. However, things took a turn that none of them expected.

Cadence was the only one to get out of the house in We Were Liars

Cady lit the fire on the main floor, and then Mirren took the second floor, and Johnny took the attic. Considering they were all lighting fires, it’s not surprising to learn that they got stuck in the house. There was a lot of accelerant and fuel for the fire, and it spread extremely fast.

Cady got out of the house, but heard the sounds of dogs barking. Harris’s sleeping dogs were trapped in the laundry room, and Cady couldn’t get back in to free them. They perished in the fire.

Well, they weren’t the only ones to perish. Cady realizes that Johnny and Mirren also didn’t get out. The two had become side tracked when the clock struck midnight, and that led to them getting trapped in the smoke and flames.

Gat was supposed to be the getaway driver on the boat, but he realized that it was taking too long for Cady, Johnny, and Mirren to get out. So, he decided to go into the house as Cady got out, and he was trapped in the flames as well.

The three Liars perished, and that explains why they didn’t get in touch with Cady all year. Cady now remembers seeing the search terms of the fire, the newspaper reporting it, and the Instagram feed with all the condolences. Her mind was trying to protect her, and she needed to be there and work through it all to remember what had happened.

How did Cady get in the water, though? The gas line in the house exploded, and the force of that blast pushed Cady in the water, causing the brain injury.

Harris is suffering from dementia in We Were Liars

It turned out that Harris was suffering from some memory loss now and then. It’s clear that he has dementia, but it’s not too serious just yet. However, that’s sure to take a turn if We Were Liars season 2 happens.

For now, he’s still manipulating situations. He makes it clear to Cady that he knows how to write a story, and right now, he’s gone with the story that the staff made a mistake and the gas line blew. However, he knows that Cady and the others started the fire, and since she is the only survivor, he can make her the sole arsonist. Not only would there be arson charges, but also animal cruelty and manslaughter.

Harris will spare it if she plays the dutiful First Grandchild for The Times. Cady decides against that, opting to wear a necklace Gat gave her and leaving the island. There are sure to be consequences to this, but hopefully, Penny, Bess, and Carrie will be able to protect Cady. Despite Cady being the only survivor and all the other two losing children, they have grown much closer together.

Johnny hasn’t left Beechwood Island just yet setting up We Were Liars season 2

The end of the We Were Liars season 1 finale showed that Ed was invited back to Beechwood Island, and he and Carrie are able to be together. However, Carrie is still addicted to pills. As Ed and Will leave their house, Carrie takes a pill and turns around to see Johnny. He hasn’t left Beechwood Island just yet, setting up a storyline for We Were Liars season 2.

On top of that, there was a comment from Bess about her Summer Sixteen. She hints that she and Carrie did something, that could have been the reason for Rosemary’s death. It also seems to link to Penny, and there’s a comment that Penny wouldn’t have been here still had they not done something. What have they held onto all these years, and does Harris secretly know?
