In 1988, the world was shocked by the events of the Lockerbie Air Disaster. It’s a true event that will be the forefront of the new Peacock series, Lockerbie: A Search for the Truth.
The new series will drop in full on Peacock on Thursday, Jan. 2. Colin Firth stars as Jim Swire, a man on a mission for much-needed answers. The series isn’t just about the disaster and the immediate effects. It’s about the search for the answers as to what happened on that fateful date.
Jim Swire is a man on a mission in Lockerbie: A Search for the Truth
The five-part series follows the story of the Lockerbie Air Disaster. On Dec. 21, 1988, the word was shocked to the core s Pan Am flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie just 38 minutes after take-off. All 259 passengers and crew members were killed and 11 residents in Lockerbie died as the plane came down.
Dr. Jim Swire lost his daughter in the incident, and he wasn’t going to accept the non-answers that came from Pan Am or the UK government about the event. He ended up becoming the spokesperson for the UK victims’ families, and he went on a relentless journey to figure out what happened and to get justice for the events.
We get to see how it all played out in the dramatized events. Jim almost lost everything in the search for answers. His life was turned upside down, but so was his faith in the justice system. It’s something so many others couldn’t have done, and we wouldn’t have the answers today if it wasn’t for Jim.
Yes, Lockerbie: A Search for the Truth is based on a true story
Very few people over the age of 30 will be able to forget the events that happened on Dec. 21, 1988. It’s one of those events that was all over TV screens. Lockerbie itself refuses to allow the people to forget that fateful and terrifying night.
While there are certainly some dramatized elements for the sake of TV, the bulk of the story is based on truth.
The event itself turned out to be a terrorist attack. A bomb was placed in the forward cargo hold and exploded while the plane was in the air. After a joint investigation by Scottish and American forces, two Libyan intelligence officers were charged with the crimes. It is still the deadliest terrorist attack carried out in the UK, and it’s one that will never be forgotten.
Lockerbie: A Search for the Truth is on Peacock on Thursday, Jan. 2.
