The end of a season always brings questions about a show’s future. So, now that you’ve binge-watched all of We Were Liars season 1, you’ll want to know if there are plans for a second season.
Caution: There are SPOILERS from the We Were Liars season 1 finale in this post.
While the first season wrapped up Cady’s mystery, there were still plenty of questions left over to make We Were Liars season 2 necessary. The question is whether everyone else involved in the show agrees with this.

Julie Plec wants We Were Liars season 2 to happen
Julie Plec is the showrunner of this adaptation, and she shares that she already has plans for We Were Liars season 2. Of course, there’s no more source material for Cady after she figures out the truth about Summer Sixteen, but there is a prequel novel called Family of Liars. This is the novel that she would like to use within a storyline for the second season.
It does look like it was hinted at in the season 1 finale. Bess is with Carrie, and Bess wonders if they’re being pushed for her Summer Sixteen. Something happened that could have led to Penny’s death, and it sounds like it may have also been linked to Rosemary. Carrie notes that had they not done whatever they did, Penny probably wouldn’t be here.
This could also be what made Carrie turn to drugs in the first place. Of course, now she’s using again, and she’s seeing Johnny, which opens the door for other Liars to stick around in We Were Liars season 2.

Will Amazon renew We Were Liars for season 2?
While there is a story, it doesn’t mean that Amazon will renew the show. This is all going to depend on the viewership of the series. There was always a risk with releasing the first season as a binge-watch. Amazon is becoming known for its weekly releases, because this is the way that most shows have seen success.
When you look at previous shows that got binge-watch releases, such at Etoile, The Horror of Dolores Roach, and With Love, the shows were canceled quickly. Etoile even had a second season already confirmed, and that was recently scrapped. So, I do worry that We Were Liars didn’t get the audience that it needed for Amazon to renew the show.
That being said, Amazon has recently canceled The Wheel of Time, which could open up some of the budget for other shows. Amazon doesn’t release the viewing figures for all shows, so we’ll have to wait a couple of months (usually at the most) to see the decision that’s made in the end.
We Were Liars is available to stream on Prime Video in full.
