NCIS: Why didn’t things feel right with Agent Torres in the Kasie-centric episode?

NCIS gave us an episode focused on Kasie more than the rest of the team in Season 17, Episode 6. However, things didn’t feel right with Torres.

Kasie spent the whole of NCIS Season 17, Episode 6 believing that her lifelong best friend was innocent of murder. There was a stumble when she realized he lied to her, but she knew that this was something he couldn’t do. Out of all the people to doubt Kasie, it was Torres, and something just didn’t feel right.

In fact, the whole team felt off at one point. Only Gibbs was certain that Kasie was right, that there was more to the situation. The guards had been covering something up with a report that wasn’t filed in full. Jack knew that Gibbs trusted Kasie’s gut, the way that he trusts so many of the others.

Yet, the team didn’t trust Kasie or Gibbs. They were sure they had the right man because all the evidence pointed in his direction. And yet, they know as well as anyone that evidence can be planted. If someone wanted to frame a man enough, they’d be able to find a way.

Out of the entire team, though, it was Torres who felt the most off throughout the night. It felt like the writers wanted to add some conflict among the team, but it didn’t suit any of them. If it was any other team member, they would have all rallied around. They have done in the past, after all. Torres would have expected the team to work every angle possible.

When it came to it, Torres was the one to think “case closed.” He was certain they had the right guy and couldn’t understand why they would continue searching through evidence. It was like he didn’t want to be wrong. That he wanted this case to be easy.

Sure, Torres loves the easier life, but he’s a damn good agent. He wouldn’t just accept everything at face value, so his attitude towards Kasie and the case just didn’t sit right with me. Had it been McGee or Bishop so certain, then maybe. Had Ziva been there still or even if it was DiNozzo, then I could have possibly accepted it. But even then, they would have listened to Kasie and trusted her gut.

It’s not often I think the NCIS writers miss the mark with character development and storylines. Torres in “Institutionalized” is sadly one of those cases where I think they did.
