The Rookie saw Jessica make a difficult decision in her relationship with Nolan. Was it the right decision? Here’s why I support that decision.

Caution: There are spoilers from The Rookie Season 2, Episode 7 in this post.

In The Rookie Season 2, Episode 7, Jessica thought she might be pregnant. If you thought it was going to lead to a discussion about their future, you’d be right. And it wasn’t an outcome everyone would want.

More from The Rookie News

After finding out she wasn’t pregnant, Jessica admitted that she wanted to be a mom. It was something that she’s never considered before, but now she was in a point in her career where it was possible and the feeling of disappointment was overwhelming.

However, it wasn’t something Nolan wants just yet. After thinking things over, he realized that he would need to wait a year or two. That wasn’t up for discussion for Jessica. And while some will be disappointed or call her selfish for not giving it just a year, I can see her side of this argument. I’m actually impressed that the writers gave us someone who was willing to walk away from a relationship because she could see it’s not a compatible one. Usually, we just get drama until they resent each other and break up!

Jessica knew that the “maybe” could never turn into a “yes.” Maybe in a year or two? Revisit that in a year or two and it could turn into another year or two. And then another. Eventually, it would be too late to even try for a child.

And that would be something Jessica would fear. She’s easily in her late 30s or early 40s. Her biological clock would be ticking. Trying for a child would be something she’d have to think about now if she wanted to avoid IVF treatments and further uncertainty.

I think if Nolan had said definitely in a year and not just a maybe (or in a year or two) then she would have reconsidered the relationship. He had an excellent reason to want to hold off for now. But he clearly didn’t seem all that certain about the decision. There was hesitation and that told Jessica that she wasn’t in the right relationship.

Sometimes you’ve got to do the right thing for you. Sometimes you have to agree that the relationship you’re in isn’t quite right for you. While maybe she could have given it a year, she knew what she wanted and felt the relationship wasn’t right. It was better walking away than resenting Nolan in future episodes of The Rookie.
