The Rookie certainly offered higher stakes in the fall finale. When the show returns, it needs to continue upping the game to keep fans intrigued.

There are some shows that seem to coast through their storylines. They end up easy to guess and can get tiresome. The Rookie has started to pick things up, but it needs to continue that when the show returns in February.

Continuing with our New Year’s Resolutions posts, this is the show that’s up next. Let’s take a look at a change it needs to make.

The show: The Rookie

The resolution: Don’t be afraid to up the game

Why it needs to be made: Right now, The Rookie is arguably coasting. For the most part, the writing has been predictable and sadly, there’s been a lot of focus on the personal lives. At first, this was great. We got a chance to know the characters, but this is a cop dramedy.

It’s time to up the stakes within the work side of the storyline. This is something that started with the winter finale. The episode ended with one of our own taken by a serial killer, and we know that the team (especially Bradford) will do everything they can to get her back.

The problem I have is that this was the winter finale, with the show knowing it was heading into an extended break. While most other TV shows are returning this month, The Rookie isn’t returning until the end of February. That means there had to be a major moment at the end that would drive people to tune in for the midseason premiere.

With that in mind, The Rookie needs to pick up the pace and the drama moving forward. We need to be on the edges of our seats more. That doesn’t mean the comedy has to disappear, but we do need to see the team in higher-stake situations.

Season 2 has been a little uneven in terms of storylines and drama. There have been some excellent ones, such as the threat of the nuclear bomb, but then there have been some unpaced ones, such as the overall storyline involving Wesley’s downward spiral. The show could be so much more, but it’s falling back on predictable storylines.

It almost feels like there’s a fear of taking risks. However, great TV show writers will be willing to take big risks.
