After an intriguing midseason premiere, I’ve got a second New Year’s Resolution for Nancy Drew. Bring more mysteries of the week.

Nancy Drew did something a little different in the midseason premiere. It opted to move away from the overall cases and focused on a case of the week. It’s something to consider in the future.

I’ve already done one Nancy Drew New Year’s Resolutions, but it’s time for a second based on the intriguing elements to the midseason premiere. There’s something that worked for this episode, and something the writers will want to consider for the future.

The initial New Year’s Resolution is to solve one of the murders. I still stand by that to show that this is a series willing to offer some answers and bring Carson back into it. However, while it does that, there’s something else that can happen.

The show: Nancy Drew

The resolution: Do more cases of the week

Why it needs to be made: One of the biggest problems with long dramas is how storylines can be dragged out. It’s one of the reasons I’m not the biggest fans of shows that use the 22-episode format anymore. There’s this one big overarching storyline that, eventually, feels dragged out and prolonged for the sake of it.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural and Arrow were able to get away with this by using a monster- or criminal-of-the-week. NCIS can opt for cases of the week and have the odd storyline take over a few episodes at a time. Criminal Minds is doing it with the final season and has done it in the past, keeping the mention of the main villain here and there but offering cases of the week to break things up.

It’s something Nancy Drew should consider. Okay, so it could get to the point where the people of Horseshoe Bay will want to consider moving, but the Drew Crew doesn’t have to stay in Horseshoe Bay. There’s the option to look elsewhere for cases, like the neighboring towns.

There is so much source material to get ideas from. Utilize them to have some weeks where cases are solved quickly.

Both the midseason finale and midseason premiere have done this, adding a new layer to the series. We’ve got to see the Drew Crew be able to celebrate, even if Nancy’s life was put in direct danger both times.

The mysteries of the week will give us something different to focus on, some new clues to look at. They help to space out episodes that focus on the bigger cases, making it so they don’t need to be solved quickly but don’t feel prolonged for the sake of it. We only need quick mentions of the bigger cases to know the Drew Crew is still working on them but there are other, more imminent situations at hand.
