When it comes to character development on The Rookie, Officer Lopez has had some of the least. Is that changing with her potentially becoming a detective?

When it comes to characters on The Rookie Alyssa Diaz’s Officer Lopez continues to be the one to receive the least development. That could be changing, as she proved her worth as a detective on the most recent episode. Could we see her step out of uniform and become the detective she’s dreamed of being?

During The Rookie Season 2, Episode 17, Diaz helped with a homicide investigation. Not only did she call out the detective for personal views clouding her judgment, but Lopez was the one to help crack the case. At the very end, the detective suggested Lopez go for the detective’s exam.

It turns out Lopez has gone for detective before. Her career was halted, but she has always wanted to make detective. Now there’s a chance that could happen. Due to her stellar work on the case, the detective Lopez worked with wants to put in a good word.

Does that mean we’ll lose Lopez as a training officer? Considering Lopez’s career dreams, it should be a yes. We should see her take the exam and move forward. That is if she passed the exam. There would be chances that she’d fail or her career would be halted for other reasons, but she would still try to fight for this dream.

Of course, this is TV. Far too often, characters get the opportunity to progress in their careers but can’t jump at the chance. In real life, they’d move forward. In a TV show, there has to be a reason to keep a character in the original position, especially when it comes to series regulars.

Of course, there could be a way around dealing with Lopez moving forward with her career. The rookies won’t be rookies forever. The Rookie Season 3, should it happen, could see other careers move forward and work with the detectives more often. This would keep Lopez in but keep the story realistic.
