Hannah Khoury decided to take the fight to Van Cleef on NCIS: New Orleans. Her actions should inspire us to look out for ourselves and others.

The NCIS: New Orleans Season 6 finale saw Hannah Khoury put her career on the line to make things better for the world. She took the fight to Deputy Director Van Cleef after realizing she wasn’t the only woman who had her career derailed because of him. She proves to be a woman that should inspire us all to be and do better.

Throughout the episode, Hannah looked into the case files of other women. It all came off the back of an agent at Pearl Harbor who had to move into the private sector because of Van Cleef’s threats. After talking to other female agents, she decided it was time to do something about it.

However, she didn’t have anyone else to back her up. Not anyone who could actually help, anyway. None of the women were willing to come forward.

While she was disappointed, she wasn’t angry. This is where her attitude is something to admire. Hannah was ready to put her career on the line, but others weren’t. They didn’t want to be forced into early retirement or even put their private-sector careers on the line. They didn’t see that anything good could come from it. Van Cleef was a man with powerful friends.

Hannah understood that. She got that the women were going to risk everything. She didn’t get angry and call them names but made it clear that they were just in a different position.

This is something we can all consider the next time we ask “why didn’t she say something earlier?” It happens all the time. Women come forward with their stories about sexual harassment in the workplace and a lot of people say “well, they should have said something at the time.” Well, NCIS: New Orleans showed why women don’t and showed us the empathy that we should all have through Hannah Khoury.

In the end, Hannah found a way to get Van Cleef to resign. It was all thanks to Quentin Carter, who decided to read Hannah’s file and figure out who really suffered the privacy breach. She never asked him to do that, but she also didn’t get angry that he did. In fact, she was grateful that he was willing to help and found the one piece of information that could help.

Hannah is a woman willing to put her career on the line for the truth. She’s looking to protect others, which makes her an excellent leader. This wasn’t a mission of revenge but one of empathy and fairness. We need more characters like Hannah Khoury on our screens.
