Can The Blacklist Season 8 premiere in the fall with the delay to filming?

Right now, our eyes are on what the fall lineup is going to look like. The big three networks opted for a normal fall lineup, but that’s not looking possible right now. The Blacklist Season 8 hasn’t started filming yet.

The Blacklist is one of the shows that films in a problematic area, New York. This was the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, so it’s not all too surprising that filming hasn’t started yet.

There is some good news. New York is getting better and is starting to open up. Filming could start, but the production studios and health officials want to make sure everything is safe for the cast and crew.

There’s no filming date set just yet

Even if there was a return date for The Blacklist filming, it wouldn’t be set in stone. We know that the L.A.-based shows, like NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeleshave tentative return dates. Those dates could change depending on the situation with the pandemic.

However, The Blacklist will need to start thinking about a return soon. A late September start will be needed to even consider a fall return. That would give time to get a couple of episodes in the bank ready for a November premiere date.

Any later than that and we’re looking at a January 2021 premiere. NBC won’t want that, but everyone has to work with whatever is safe right now.

Could we have more graphic-novel style animation?

The Blacklist Season 7 finale did something that’s never been done before. Since the shutdown happened partway through the episode, the showrunners opted to get an animation team involved. The actors did the voice work in their own closets during the lockdown and all the work on the finale was done virtually.

It certainly worked out as an interesting episode. The mixture of animation and live-action brought us an intriguing finale and made use of the material already filmed. Other shows opted to stop with whatever the last fully-filmed episode was.

Will we see more of that happen? Probably not. That was a one-off due to the shutdown. However, I always say never say never.
