Will Prodigal Son be another casualty of Tuesday night programming on FOX?

Prodigal Son will return in January 2021, but it won’t take up our Monday nights anymore. The FOX drama will move to Tuesday nights, following new episodes of The Resident.

TVLine shared the news of the night change. The show will premiere sometime in January 2021, we don’t have a date just yet. But this isn’t about that. It’s all about the move to Tuesday nights.

Could this be a problem for the series? It certainly has us worried.

Tuesdays aren’t good for FOX

There is a lot of competition on Tuesday nights. CBS sees the majority of the viewers tune in throughout the night, starting with NCIS. TV shows going up against NCIS have struggled, especially when it comes to shows on FOX.

The Gifted aired its first season on Mondays and then moved to Tuesdays for Season 2. That led to the live TV ratings dropping and the show being canceled. The Resident‘s move to Tuesdays led to a dip in the live ratings, which had fans worried about the series. In fact, if it wasn’t for the pandemic, there are questions about whether the medical drama would have been renewed.

While this isn’t about those two shows, they are recent examples of dangers when shows move from Mondays to Tuesdays. There’s just too much competition on the night.

Will FOX have lower expectations for Prodigal Son Season 2?

Part of the problem is fewer people are watching live TV now. Many watch on-demand or wait for shows to head to a streaming platform to watch. FOX needs to start lowering expectations for live ratings and look at the streaming figures more.

Is this going to happen this year? There is a little hope. Part of my concern is FOX will have high hopes for this show after the performance in the first season.

Prodigal Son Season 2 is going to premiere in January, which is traditionally a time for lower ratings. But it’s also going to depend on the ratings for other TV shows on the same night and the ratings among other FOX shows. FOX will also assess the chance of new pilots potentially performing better.

FOX needs to accept that Tuesdays are a difficult night, but in recent years, it’s been concerning when shows have moved to Tuesdays. That is now the worry for Prodigal Son.

What can we do to help?

So, instead of just focusing on the negative, let’s look at what we can do to make sure Prodigal Son stays on the air. It’s all about watching as close to live as possible.

Watching live on FOX is the best thing, but there are options afterward. Prodigal Son Season 2 will air on Hulu the day after the episode. Watching within 24 hours of the episode dropping in excellent, but watching within 72 hours will certainly help. If you’re really going to wait, don’t wait longer than a week. Make sure an episode is viewed before the next episode each Tuesday night.

By watching, you prove to FOX that you want this show on the air.
