Don’t miss the Chicago PD Season 8 premiere live on NBC tonight

The Chicago PD Season 8 premiere airs tonight, and you’re not going to want to miss this one. Intelligence is under pressure from the calls for police reform, while Atwater is under fire from those who don’t like his decisions at the end of Season 7.

The episode, titled “Fighting Ghosts,” is going to bring in some of the current-day issues. This isn’t that surprising. After all, the ending to Season 7 suggested that this was coming up anyway. Have the writers gone a little deeper into the story because of the protests and the Black Lives Matter movement?

More from Chicago PD News

I’d say hopefully. One thing Chicago PD has failed to do is really utilize Atwater and offer genuine stories about the systemic racism against Black people in Chicago. Every now and then, we get one of these race-related storylines and then the topic is just forgotten about until the next time. This helps nothing.

We need to see it for what it really is. It’s a prevalent problem, and having Atwater stand against the blue line during the Chicago PD Season 7 finale offers a chance to talk about this topic properly.

A focus on police reform on the Chicago PD Season 8 premiere

The synopsis offers a little hope that the show is going to do more than just offer lip service to the topic. There’s a focus on police reform, with Nicole Ari Parker stepping into the role of Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller.

She’s heading the police reform. That means Intelligence, like so many other parts of the Chicago PD, will face scrutiny. Voight probably won’t like all the pressure on him, but this isn’t a problem that’s just going to go away. He may not be the right fit for the reforms.

I’m intrigued by the side she stands on when it comes to Atwater’s decision. Please tell me she supports the call he made.

Check out the promo and synopsis for the Chicago PD Season 8 premiere:

"The team responds to the shooting of a 5-year-old girl and they must work the case while facing new obstacles that come from the heightened attention on police reform. Atwater is targeted by a group of officers who want to hurt him for standing against the blue wall. Voight questions whether he’s cut out for a new form of policing as he manages oversight from the CPD’s deputy superintendent."
