8. The Bletchley Circle

Years it ran: 2012 to 2014

Network it aired on: The series aired on ITV in the UK. It’s on BritBox in the U.S.

What it’s about: We know now that there were many women who helped the war effort in the UK by breaking codes. They worked at Bletchley Park, and that’s where we head for The Bletchley Circle. We follow a group of codebreakers in 1952 as they figure out the clues to solve grisly murders.

These women look normal. One of them is Susan, a 1950s housewife and mother. However, when she realizes that there’s a pattern in the murders of Jane Hart and Patricia Oakes, she sets out to get to the bottom of it. She’ll need her former friends from Bletchley to help out.

Why you need to watch it: This series brings us a full lead of women solving crimes. It’s not often we get this with period crime dramas, and that’s just one of the reasons to watch it.

It’s also well-written, while reminding us of some of the work the women did during the Second World War. We also see how they were expected to return to what women once were after all this despite proving they offered something valuable to the country outside of the house.
