Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for FBI Season 5 episode 18

As FBI heads towards its Season 5 finale, a big question is if it’ll be losing one of its best agents. While it seems this character will be staying, there’s still a chance personal issues could take them away.

A major subplot for Season 5 has been Stuart Scola (John Boyd) balancing his relationship with FBI agent Nina Chase (Shantel VanSanten). They worked together until Nina revealed she was pregnant and transferred to the White Collar crime division.

In the recent FBI crossover, Nina was shot while trying to help stop a terrorist attack in New York City. Jubal and Isobel decided not to tell Scola as he was on an undercover job. So when Scola found out, he was outraged. Thankfully, Nina recovered, but the experience shook Scola.

In the most recent episode, Scola was still distracted by Nina’s condition and his worries about fatherhood. This had him considering jumping to join Nina in the white-collar division rather than risk his life in the field so much. It was added to by trying to save a patrol officer who’d been caught in the crossfire of a shootout with a terrorist suspect and aiding a pregnant woman on a case.

Is Scola leaving FBI in Season 5?

In the end, Scola changed his mind after talking to an arrested suspect who was sorry he’d stepped away from being a dad. He told Tiffany that he couldn’t give up helping people and that Nina would understand. So it does sound like Scola is staying on the team even as he handles being a dad.

John Boyd talked to Cinemablend about how Scola can approach fatherhood and avoid some of the mistakes his own dad made.

"“I think Scola would be surprised at what it’s like to have a close relationship with his son. I don’t think Scola was incredibly close with his own father. I think his father surrounded himself with money and success and riches and exterior looking good, and I don’t think he ever had that closeness. But I think what would surprise him about himself as a dad is the closeness and the intimate connection with your own son, and the softness and tenderness of being a parent. [That] is my hope for how he would respond to that.”"

While it’ll be a while before Nina gives birth, it sounds like Scola will be staying on FBI and ready for the challenge of fatherhood.

FBI Season 5 airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
