Is Molly Burnett leaving Law & Order: SVU? (Is another cast change coming?)
The Law & Order: Special Victims Unit/Law & Order: Organized Crime crossover was a big event for both teams. But it also may mean a big change for Law & Order: SVU as one detective may be departing.
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 24, Episode 22
The plotline had the SVU and OC teams working together to track down who was behind a website offering anyone a chance to order a rape or murder for hire. Part of that had Grace Muncy (Molly Burnett) talking to Jet (Ainsley Seiger) about the latter being a higher-promoted detective. Muncy told Velasco that she’d been offered a promotion and a spot on a new task force working with the DEA.
The case was a tough one for the teams that included the shocking death of OC Detective Jamie Whelan (Brent Antonello). It ended with them capturing the man behind the website to shut it down. However, it appeared Muncy had cleaned out her desk and accepted the job with the task force. She and Fin shared a hug before she walked out.
So does this really mean the end of Molly Burnett on SVU?
Why would Molly Burnett leave Law & Order: SVU?
Grace Muncy debuted in Season 24, Episode 2 as a member of the Gang Task Force working with the team. Benson was impressed by her drive and offered her a spot on SVU. Muncy’s attitude could be hard as she badly roughed up suspect Elias Olson. She followed it up by losing it during the trial, allowing Olson to go free. While she helped capture the guy later, Muncy was smarting from this failure.
That was added to by a case that had Muncy’s brother tied to a drug dealer. Between her rough tenure on SVU and wanting a bigger promotion, it seems Muncy is indeed gone for good. TVLine has confirmed that Molly Burnett is leaving the series.
The team has been building some new faces in Terry Bruno (Kevin Kane) and Tonie Churlish (Jasmine Batchelor), who can take up the slack now Muncy is gone.
An interesting bit was former SVU cop Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) helping on the case. It was clear Rollins truly missed being a cop and a possibility the producers realized letting Giddish go was a mistake and opening the door for Rollins returning.
